We opened a loft in our 1978 built home and plan on using it as an office. The space is about 15' x 7' and we are using an Alaco loft ladder that will fold "flush" against the wall. You can see it installed. To the right of the ladder is about 156" to the wall. The other side is about 76". My wife wanted something similar to the first picture but I'm unsure of the best way to install the posts or how many to install on the long (156") side. I am thinking of using 6x6x8' posts, cut in half, and then cutting half of the post out lengthwise for 8" - so I'd be removing a (5.5"/2=2.75" x 8") section at the bottom. Then use two lag bolts to fasten to the wall (there is a 2x8 header behind it) and maybe some 4" wood screws at an angle on the interior side of the bottom post. Does this sound secure? Is three enough? There would be two 70" spans on the long side and one 65" span on the short side. Thanks for the help!
