I think I would take the items around the tv and add them to the fabric hanging above the chairs. then that way you could add a tall plant behind that chair, my only other suggestion is the rug needs to be more colorful to balance out all the other colorful things going on.

I really like your rug with the furniture colors but I think the walls should be in a blue color something like the table lamp. Just my opinion .

What are your three most favorite colorful things in this room? Pink throw? Curtains? A pillow? Put them on the sofa and take a photo. Your wall color can take its cue from those objects.

I think you have a good start, but need to do some rearranging and editing. Take down the artwork above the TV, and the photos above the entry way hooks. I really like the big mirror, but the chest underneath is not long enough. Try centering the chest on the window with the chairs on each end. Try grouping the picture from over the TV and the wall hanging to the left of the TV with the current piece in the wall behind the sofa. The overall grouping should be centered on the couch. Obviously, I don't have measurements of the artwork so cut pieces of paper the same size of the pieces and play with taping them on the wall. Take a picture of the grouping to post so Houzzers can help you arrange. Also, please post mirror measurements so Houzzers can make suggestions on furniture to ground it. It should be about 25% longer than the mirror is wide. You will get the most help by rearranging, posting new pictures and asking for further feedback. Have fun! ❤️

I think it's a nice room! The only thing I'd change is move that painting above the tv. It's a great painting but you've got a sort of pyramid thing going on there with the width of the table, tv, and painting. Is there somewhere you could move it? Maybe to the right of the tv and the long, narrow piece to the left - or on the wall behind the couch?

you look like a cross between a monochrome and boho. monochrome everything is virtually the same color and it causes the eye to stay with the large important artwork above - you do not have enough of this. in addition chairs and cushions should match more and there should be less.

With boho the idea is to mix much in colorful colors, it provides a soft colorful look, yet has a central theme. i think yours would be the hot pink, but you are short on color.

i am sure these can be combined, i am not sure how to do it. if you choose we could try to guide you one or the other. or maybe one of the great designers we have could show to how to mix.

I like everything in this room. Some of it I looove. But there is too much--you don't need to add, you need to subtract. I know it's hard when you really like everything.

What I would do, if you're attached to every single piece and want to keep it all:

-Move the couch to the window wall. Use the darker wood table currently in the entry and the white painted table as end tables. Consider painting the dark one to match the white.

-Use the dresser as your console table in entry. Hang the quilt so the bottom of it is just behind the dresser top so there is no exposed wall. Alternatively, create a "frame" of wall around it, with equal distance between the dresser top to quilt bottom and quilt top to ceiling.

-Move the tv to the shiplap wall. Use the low trunk as your tv stand. Since you will be sitting closer, viewing height will be lower.

-Use the matching chairs where your sofa was, facing straight into the room. Use the mismatched chairs on the other side of the room, upholstered on your left as you look at them and spindle back on the right.

-Same coffee table.

-Mirror where tv was.

-Painting to the right of tv, other hanging to the left.

-Take out every single little trinket and small picture and be very brutal when deciding what goes back. Remember, you can rotate your stock!

-Slide the small rug by the far door under the bench to collect shoes or in front of the door to collect dirt. It's useless where it is.

This is such great advice! I completely agree that there's too much in the room. My mother in law used to tell me that I didn't have enough seating in the room, so I think I over compensated. ;) Love all the ideas, and I'm going to be spending the weekend rearranging.

Havingfun - You're right, I do have a cross of monochrome and boho. When we first moved in, I was going monochrome - the walls were gray, and I had the gray furniture and got the rug to create a calming atmosphere. But after 2 winters, all the gray was getting to me, so I've been on a mission to brighten things up!

Lindsay hit the nail on the head. You have too much in this room. Do you really need seating for 8 in this room? I'd move all seating out of the room, as well as tables and lamps. Then bring the couch in closer to the TV. Put your 2 gray chairs on either side of the TV. If you need somewhere to hang your purse/shoes/coats, find wall unit that is larger, (than the wire one by the TV) and center on the entry wall.

This shouts entry piece. Put your bench (currently by your window) beneath it by the front door, and center it on that wall. I don't think you need a lamp in that space as you appear to have plenty of light in the room. I like the idea of putting a mirror opposite your window to add light and reflect the outdoors. I'd put your upholstered bench under your window for additional seating, if needed. As pretty as your artwork above the tv is, it's too square (with all the other square items below it). Find something to go on either side of your tv, not above it. If you want something above your tv, consider a shelf where you put some pictures, just be sure it is noticeably wider than the tv/media cabinet. I'd hang your lovely quilt on the wall that faces the front door. It can be appreciated from near or far. The little pictures that are there now cannily be appreciated when standing right in front of them. Good luck!

Center the pair of chairs in front of the window and turn them at the same angle....both square or both turned in slightly.

Cheers to a fellow Wisconsin dweller :) I honestly love the wild nature of all this stuff (including the rug!)! No, it's not traditional interior design but that's refreshing. My gut reaction although this might not be what you want to hear- is if you painted the room a simple creamy white, it would be perfect in a "Domino" esque way :)

Please post pics of your weekend efforts! Even though this room can benefit from some tweaks, I still find it so refreshing to see a room that actually represents the tastes and personalities of the people using it. So kudos on that.

The first thing about your room that makes it feel "unfinished" to you, makes it seem "unbalanced" to me; art and other items hung so they're above door and window frames. Here's a general "rule" that works for most people" 5-5-75. If something is hanging by itself, it should be centered 5' above the floor. It it hangs above a piece of furniture, the bottom of the hanging item should be 5" above the furniture. And last, an item should be no more than 75% of the width of the furniture it hangs with. The wall decor and the excess furniture can be easily adjusted, as suggested above. And don't forget to give the eye some places to rest from all the decor and color. See if you can find a smaller drum that matches the large one to hang at the entry.

Move all the small items out of the room. Paint the walls white. Begin adding items back, selectively. The white will give you a neutral yet light backdrop for your colorful items.

A C Foxner, I love what you've done. The room needs a bit of tweaking and rearranging and then it will feel more balanced. Everything hung on the walls needs to be lowered. BTW, I don't think you need to paint. I'll return with a visual in a bit.

I lowered the wall hanging, replaced the rug with one with a bit more color but not too wild, and removed the chest by the sofa and the metal piece on the wall by the door. I would have centered the chairs on the window, but I'm not very good at that.

BTW, A C, you've done a really nice job blending all the disparate pieces from modern to vintage to make a really eclectic room with lots of personality. IMO, eclectic is the hardest style to pull off. You just needed a bit of help with balance, but your instincts are right on. ;-)

This is what a room that doesn't try too hard looks like...great job! The small tweaks suggested are good and a new rug would make a huge difference.

I love your ethos! One change I would make is I would move mirror and put art that is over TV to where mirror was. I would also remove the long silk art piece to the right of TV. Keep that wall free so you reduce the eye distractions. I think the art is wonderful and needs its own space without competing with the TV. Other suggestions for tweaks are good. But don't loose your "voice" in the space. Wonderful.

I have that green velvet armchair!! I've tried it all over the house and it now resides in a smallish (in the inn business, we say "cozy") bedroom.

Hi! Thanks again to everyone for the fantastic advice! Here's what I've been up to: I moved the floral painting from over the TV to where the mirror was. It's still probably a little too big over the gold chest (not meeting the 75% guideline (thanks for letting me know about those guidelines decoenthusiaste)) but I like it much better than the mirror. I think the mirror will end up going in the basement. I ordered the orange/pink/gray rug from West Elm that groveraxle found. Removed the wooden chest. Hubby missed the chest and wanted something to put his things on by his side of the couch, so I picked up a round glass table on silver hairpin legs - I looked for something that wouldn't take up much visual weight. Then I threw a basket under it so he can stash his blanket.

Then I started on rearranging. First, I tried the gray chairs and cream table centered in front of the window. Seemed too crowded in that area.

Then I removed the cream table. Still seemed a little off in that area.

Then I moved the chairs to flank the tv. Getting better.

Then I moved the chairs to the old configuration, with one by the TV and one by the gold chest, and brought the bench in under the window. aaaannnddd... I think I like it! It feels much more balanced, and there's seating for 6. We commonly have 5 people in the living room at one time.

I haven't yet lowered the quilt rod (although I did change the orientation of the quilt so it's not hanging out so high above that table), or lowered the organizer with the coat hooks by the garage door, but that's next on the list.

Oh, and just a side note, I didn't get these 2 cuties in the pictures I originally posted - you can just see the tops just peeking over the couch. I had them reupholstered last year, and I LOVE them. They're in the "entry" way by the front door, which we seldom use - pretty much only when guests come over.

Try the chairs in front of the window as in photo #1 with the hairpin leg table between them. It is better suited height wise for those chairs and the white table is the right height for the sofa. The bench currently under the window would be long enough to ground the painting and the golden chest could go under the coat hooks. I LOVE the red chairs!

Kaye's idea to try switching the end tables is good. That white one was too big for the mid mod chairs and overpowered them, but the hairpin table may just work. I also love the red chairs, though they look a little tight back there. I miss the yellowish green Bergere chair; I'd like to see you bring it back, if you can. It added a lot of personality. I also wish there were a place to use the mirror, but I think that may have been just one item too far.

One more thing: the floral canvas is a little large for the chest below, but it can work. Can the chest and chair together be centered on the wall? Move them both to the left and put the lamp on the left side of the chest. If not, then bring the little straight-backed chair back on the left side of the chest to help balance it.

The cat coordinates beautifully with the room...I, too, miss the mirror...would it work anywhere turned lengthwise?

I'm really liking the changes. But let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater! Bring back the green/yellow chair. The red chairs seem just too big for that spot. But you can play around and see what you come up with.

I miss the mirror too, actually. :) I could put the mirror where the quilt wall hanging is, but it would still be too large for the table underneath, wouldn't it? That table is 35", which is the same as the gold chest it was above. The mirror is 46" wide.

fissfiss - instead of getting a cat to match my decor, I coordinated my decor to the cat. lol. ;)

P.S. I adore the color coordinated kitties! Is there more than one? They aren't hams like many we see. Could you hang the mirror vertically over the table?

What about putting the long bench in the entry and the mirror above it! Those sizes might work and that would be nice at the entry point. Nice for women to set down a purse, sit and put on a shoe, etc. And mirror for "check ups" as you come and go.
