Hi, unless you live in north Florida, you likely won't have any luck. I had an arbequina for a while that grew really well but no fruit. I checked around and found out that they need more chill hours than what we provide here in Orlando. I've seen several olive trees in my area that have grown to a nice size (beautiful trees), but they are fruitless.

It's a shame too since these trees are stocked at most of the area nurseries and at Lowes. The sellers should know better.

The complexities of which plants are going to do well in exactly which area are a little beyond the expertise of big box stores that have innumerable locations all across the country. You want expertise from people with any knowledge about growing plants? That's going to cost extra.

Olives are grown for reasons other than flowering and setting fruit :-) It is a small growing, broadleaved evergreen tree that is extremely drought tolerant and can live to an extended age and often has an attractive, twisted, gnarly habit. They may often flower here but seldom fruit as our summers just don't get hot enough. But they still make an attractive garden addition.

I hear they do gangbusters in north Florida though as far as fruiting. Anyway, it would take quite a few trees to produce any oil (not to mention the expense of buying the tools to extract the oil) and you have to spend too much time brining the fruit if you plan on eating them as-is; not worth it for me even if I could grow them.

Thanks to all of you who posted. My husband was having all his hopes high that it would produce fruit for him since he's into olive eating for a healthy living. I'll let him know not to count on it for a fruit production. There was another one variety he bought and we simply ran out of space and it's still sitting in a huge pot.

In any case, we'll have to discuss whether to keep letting it grow where it is, or take it down and let something else grow there. I read that although they're slow growers, they can eventually grow to quite a gigantic tree which will compete for space with two of our existing Macademia trees growing next to it.

Other than that, it's true that it's quite a beautiful young tree as it is now ..., but for the long term, maybe it's best for it to be replaced with another fruit tree which is more adaptable to the climate and as well be more viable for fruit production.
