You might want to consider that once you have it delivered and in place, post a new dilemma with it in the room so that we can get a better feel of the space when it is in the space.. It makes it easier for us to give you ideas for that perfect chair. We can then also offer suggestions for art and lighting if you like. I'd put something crazy and modern around it. Eames (overused, I know) or Saarinen.

Is this a mirrored table? What is the style nearby? What colors are in room? Do you have or antipathetic getting a rug? If so, purchase rug first so you can ensure a good fit. Rugs are harder to find than chairs. I don't think ghost chairs are going to give you best look so I would maybe bring several styles home to test before deciding. Make sure you measure clearance under edge of table as this can affect chair selection and comfort level at the table. Fun piece to work with. Sorry to ask so many questions, but important because as you point out 6 chairs or 4 side and two arm will be a significant investment.

If you are on a very tight budget, I would shop some of the "low cost shops" and you can find chairs in low price ranges. I will warn that if you plan to keep these chairs for a while, invest in good quality, made in America chairs if you can. You could take an approach, where you buy 4 side chairs now that are great quality. Wait and save and then buy two "host" chairs to mix and match later. I would go for quality.

Flo, thank you for all your suggestions! I am more prone to appreciating Louis XIV style or late 19th century looks. Although I am wondering if a low back chair would be better with this table to showcase the mirrored table? I do like the Hickory chair and the Sweetheart chairs that you posted. But you are right, I'll have to measure under the table for clearance, first. To answer your questions, I don't intend to purchase a rug for the area, the walls are a light gray, and it's a 60" long dining table, so I think 4 chairs will be sufficient. It is a studio apartment, so I have to be careful with space. I do plan to paint a canvas (44"x21") to hang on the dining wall. I plan on painting peacock feathers that incorporates the main colors in my place (gray background, with navy and yellow feathers with hints of other shades of blues, purples, greens, golds, and silver).

I think Hickory Chairs are excellent quality. In their "custom" line, you can take a basic Louis XVI or Louis XIV styling and select wood finishes (they have a beautiful silvery finish that might be great) and fabrics for all the "pieces" of the upholstery.

go to their website www.hickorychair.com and hunt around a bit. Maybe make a call to their main number and find out who locally "distributes". There is another "custom" chair company I am hunting for that might be another source for you. You can also search on line through the various "selling" websites like craigslist and others, but I would caution on "used" chairs. They are hard to get repaired and sometimes just aren't very good quality. Lots of fakes out there too.

I am only concerned about the "apron" around this table that appears to be 4" below table top. This constrains leg room for chairs. Just be aware. Knowledge is power to good selections.

So, I got the table!

I'm happy it shipped in great condition! Flo, I measured the apron, it's actually 5.5" long. Total clearance under the table is 50"Lx24"H and 21"W on the ends. I'd like to place two chairs on either side of the table, however, I'm willing to put a chair on each end, as well.

Not sure if you can tell, but the wall is a light gray. I do need a swag lamp to go over the table, and chairs, of course!

It's a chandelier from Lamps Plus. The sette I bought is about 65 inches wide so too wide for your table but I think you can easily find one to fit and it would looks super glam on the side with the wall!!! I'll start looking for you!

Can you turn the table so the end is at the short wall? Seating and decorating would work better that way if you have room? Velvet (cotton) or even microfiber (kind of velvety) would be great. I would love Navy Blues with this table. As I mentioned earlier, when selecting chairs, make sure the seats are low enough (less than 18" high) so your thighs can fit under that "apron". That will be your biggest challenge in selecting chairs. No one even thinks about this, and then finds they have chairs they can't sit in at the table because of this restriction. So you are well armed with that information. Take a tape measure with you when shopping for sure and measure. Don't believe anything but your own measurements. A lot of web sites don't even have that measurement noted. So, it is a bit of a bummer, but it can be overcome.

Flo, I noticed that when I started looking again! I think the lowest I've seen so far is 19". And I re-measured... the apron is actually 6" and the clearance under that is 24.5". Do you think 18" is still good, or should I look for something shorter? I did turn the table, but it would be a tighter fit since it leaves only 43" between the table and my bed (it's a studio apartment). I'll try to take better photos so you can see it better.

OK, guess I missed that point. Could you move the bed against the wall the other way and put the table against the other side? It could double as a "vanity"/make-up table/writing desk and when desired pull out for dining table? If you can have it lengthwise so when you come into the space you see the end of the table that might look better? You could also get some white leather stools to slip under the table for extra seating? I'll post some ideas. You could use two of these instead of a settee?

Don't judge, my place is a mess! But here are some pics of the entire room. And the dining box I still need to break down and dispose of.

When you walk into the room, the dining table is to the right, followed by the bed.

Sectional is at the foot of the bed, the side table has been moved to allow space since the dining table delivery box is blocking lots of space at the moment.

Messy coffee table, but this is the living area. (And no, the curtains don't stay like that, I did it to allow the heat to come into the room!)

Dining table box and my old bed, both of which will be removed and this area will be turned into a mini bar. Maybe? Or a reading book, but I'm not much of a reader. Open to suggestions!

The first thing that hits me is reversing the "bedroom" area and turning the sectional so it faces the other opposite wall with the TV and then the dining table. I would need some room measurements but I could do a layout for you to save you moving stuff too much before you think it might work. Then when you come into the apartment you would be looking into a "living area" and when you enter further see the dining. Then the bed could probably fit against the back of the sofa tucked in a little bit of a "hidden" view. Have you tried something like that? If you measure you walls, left to right and across the entire long wall with the window and the length of the window, I can layout something in a scale drawing to turn this into a little "jewel box" of a place! Thanks for posting the photos. It really helps understand your space.

I did have a few layouts and trust me, I moved things a ton before! I do like this layout the best, but I can look for my floor plan and post it!

Also, I do like that I can currently get into bed on either side, rather than having the bed up against a wall like I had it at one point. Even if it means walking through the living area to get to the other side. I was thinking I'll put up sheer curtains around my bed, canopy-style, to separate it from the dining area. So far, I really do like my current layout since it functions pretty well for me.

I've had my bed where the dining table currently is, but I felt like that closed the space since it's immediately to the right when walking in. I've also thought about putting the dining table where my old bed is (see previous pics) and have the end of the dining table on the short wall side, and then move the sectional back some to have more living space. The short wall behind the kitchen is only 60" and the width of the dining table is 32" (total size of dining table is 60"x32") so I felt like I may not have much room to work with on that side. I can't wait to see what you create!

OK Great. Question. Does your sofa sit in two pieces, so you could switch the side the chaise is on? I have an initial layout for you but I made some assumptions. Is the bed that is staying a "double size"? Or queen size? How wide across is the coffee table? How long from the back to end of chaise? How wide is the TV stand? I have assumed in this layout, a double size bed; a 48" TV stand; a 24" round coffee table. My template for the dining table is 2" less wide than your table but size on length is right. So it would be 1" wider in your space, but I think that is fine. My goals are to give you "living space" view upon entering your apartment. Some bedroom privacy while still allowing space either side of bed, leaving space for heat and drapery and then once the other bed is out, that is open space for perhaps a small desk and chair? I can't tell the size of the rug, but I'm sure we can figure out how that goes, once we settle on the main pieces. I also assumed the TV connections could be moved to the other side? Right now, you come right into looking at the bed. So, if you haven't made the bed, it doesn't feel good. Also, having the dining table within reach of the bed, not good. The leaning mirror we can put on the wall where the current "extra" bed is. Or possibly in another location.

Here is drawing. I guessed that the longest wall was on from entry to windows? Is that correct? I can revise this with further feedback. I put a "divider" of some sort at the back of the sofa/chaise for separation. I put a small desk/make-up table with a small stool in the space where your "extra bed" is now along with placing the leaning mirror on the 60" wall. So this becomes a little "dressing" area. I also angled the dining table to provide interest and a wider path to the seating area. I placed one dining chair (TBD) in the far corner to open things up for everyday seating. I put the gold hexagon (didn't have a template that size hence the rectangle shape at end of sofa.) If you keep that table, I would suggest we use some "Chalk Paint" and give it some color that works with the rest of your pieces a bit better. The round piece beside the bed is the little silver table you have by the bed now. I kept all furniture about 6" away from the window wall for ease of drapes and heating/cooling unit. See if this is correct in terms of measurements. I guessed at size of the chaise and sofa? It looks like a chair and chaise butted up to each other? Hoping they can be separated? I think this arrangement would open up your space, and give it more of a functional/homey feeling? See what you think!

I can separate the sectional, but I can't switch sides (there is an arm rest on the love seat portion opposite the side of where the chaise is), and that would leave the chaise side without an arm rest. I do like my current living/bedroom set up. I did try your layout when I only had my bed and sofa, but I prefer the head of my bed to be against a wall, so I switched it to what it's currently at and do like it. I hadn't thought of angling the dining table, but I do like that look! I will try it out when I'm home again on Wednesday. The bed I'm keeping is a queen, since my full bed was too narrow to accommodate two people. The sofa is 80.5"Wx59"Dx35"H. I don't have the circumference of the coffee table on me at the moment. The rug is just under 8x10. The TV stand/console table is 32''Hx42''Wx19''D.

As of right now, I just placed that mirror next to the nightstand to get it out of the way when I painted. I can move the nightstand to the window side of the bed to create more room for the dining space. The side table was a gift from a friend that refurbished the table and I fell in love with it. I know, my tastes are eclectic :/

I hope this info helps! I just really want to be able to find the right dining chairs for the table. I would choose a bench over stools, and I would want a bench, settee, or individual side chairs, or a mix up of these.
