I'm in Southern California, zone 10, and there's someone not too far away from here with a huge carambola tree growing in his yard, loaded with fruit.

(note the tree does appear to be right up against the south-facing corner side of his house, so I'm sure that might be helping)

In Finland? Wow that IS far north! Down here in the almost near tropics carambola do well in sandy loamy soil. Any fruit fertilizer with minors will make it happy and not so often, I fert mine every few months, and don't over water it, especially in winter, most of all keep it warm.

So, where in Finland? I spent a lot of time in Tuurku and Helsinki while working in Salo. I LOVED it there :-)

Thanks for replying! I'm born in Tornio in Lapland, but I've moved around Finland. My wife is from Salo, and even I agreed to stay there for a year and a half. The last 4 years we have been living in Kuopio. I actually hated it in Salo, too far south for me. Not real winters, only slush and barely freezing(ok, some cold tops but anyways..).

What comes to my wife, she hates cold REAL winter :D

I prefer real winter with lots of snow than rainy and foggy mess.

I did repot my starfruit. The soil it was in was too water retaining. It put it in kind of 5-1-1 mix with great amount of coarse sand in it. Hasnt complained about it yet :) Lets see how it goes, I'm not expecting any fruit, but the plant is still gorgeus.

Starfruit are very hardy. I have a large one in my yard here in Florida that is LOADED with fruit; it's just growing in sand and a bit of compost. They grow and fruit very well in containers from what I hear.

The plant responded well to re-potting. Putting out new growth nicely, so it seems to like the sandy well draining mix.

mine has always looked chlorotic. it produces fruit, but the leaves never seem rich and green colored.

ive tried iron and magnesium. the iron may have helped a little,

but, i think it still needs something.
