there are tread pads designed with dogs in mind, and many kinds are specifically made to be removable later with no damage. do a little web search.

Adding to what acm said, you can contact the company that installed your flooring for suggestions. The company that installed our hardwood said that about 80% of their clients who put wood on the stairs later come back looking for carpeting in the form of a runner or even total coverage, for safety, to protect stairs or to reduce noise.

I think a handsome natural coloured sisal rug would do wonders here. You can run it wall to wall or use a runner and have a small area rug cut to put it at the bottom of the stairs. That gives the runner/stair carpet a "reason for being". So long as you have two things in the same material, you have a design element. Hence the addition of a little area rug on the landing and Bob's your Uncle...you have a design concept!

I bought my stair tread rugs through Wayfair. I bought the stair tread tape through Amazon. The product I bought was similar to this:

I have not removed the tape to see if it has damaged the stairs. It is not supposed to. The carpet treads help our dogs quite a bit.
