Interior door pricing

Hi! We are building currently and are having a hard time with our interior door selections. We want doors with a high quality feel/weight and that have sharp detail. We are looking at paint grade panel doors. We are being pushed toward solid core Masonite doors by our builder but really don't like the molded look. Our house has a very nice finishout (it is quoted at $1.5m in Texas so our dollars go a long way). We found a Trustile showroom and like the weight, style options, and look a lot. Unfortunately we are having a tough time getting straight answers from anyone on pricing. We are willing to pay more but more is a very vague term. Can anyone tell us where price points would hit for solid core vs Trustile MDF vs solid wood (even a pine door)? Thanks!

We are going through the same process and because everyone is so busy, it can be hard to get anyone to respond. I ended up creating a spreadsheet with all the specs to make sure the quotes I was receiving were direct 1-1 comparisons. I also did a lot of research and learned Trustile is superior quality to Masonite. Do a Google search for "Masonite door complaints" (use the quotation marks) and you'll find lots of people are dissatisfied.

if you are committed to Masonite, do you know you can go to the Home Depot website and check the pricing yourself? Just be sure to put in solid core door & pre-hung.

Our doors are a custom height so they are pricier. And Masonite didn't make that size so I received quotes for Jeldwen doors and Trustile doors. Anyway, for a 30" x 90", 1 3/8" solid core MDF door in a shaker style here are some prices:

Jeldwen = $317
Trustile = $325

I also received pricing for solid mahogany doors and they are all in excess of $1,000.

If you're buying them through an installer, they're going to be 30-50% more expensive than if you purchase them directly from the manufacturer. That may be why you're having a little more trouble getting answers. This is true with virtually any installer/decorator.

That said, I absolutely recommend the solid-core, even if they're more expensive. We have hollow core in our house and it's just "fabulous" hearing your guests using the bathroom when you're sitting in the living room. (Yes, that's sarcasm.)

Solid core doors will provide you with more privacy throughout the house. If you have teenagers who listen to loud music, you will appreciate having them.

We have priced both last year for a couple of projects. The Trustile is a great door, but will price out about 4x what the Masonite will.

But, it's at least 3x the quality of the Masonite.

Just to clarify, do you mean Trustile MDF doors are 4x more expensive than Masonite solid core doors or 4x more than hollow core doors?

We were looking for some specialty size doors, so I don't know if it is a good comparison. I think the building supply house priced a TruStile wooden door compared to a molded door.

Db, it's been a while since I did the Trustile research and I believe I found the best prices at Door for Builders, They will ship anywhere in the country.

Thanks I've been doing a bit of research on Masonite vs. Trustile, etc and I'm going to my local Trustile dealer this week to see a showroom in person in the Seattle area. I don't want door jamb/lock issues, so I'm willing to pay a bit more for quality and replacing our cardboard hallow door crap. Stay tuned, thanks much Sageviews!
