OMG how does anyone have time to do it every day?! Do you not have day jobs outside the house? It's once a week for me.

Oh boy... I should every day, it actually only gets done when it absolutely has to (at least once a month before euchre night! LOL). Or, once the dust puppies get as big as the cats. We have 5 dogs, 1 being a Corgi, two being some sort of shepherd mix, a heeler/aussie mix & a pit/mastiff mix. 3 cats. It's like Hair-topia at our house. The tumbleweeds are out of control. I have a 20 year old Kirby vac that I love and an attachment that does well on the furniture. I swiffer mop traffic areas and paw prints when needed. Have a roomba upstairs where the carpet is, it runs 5 days a week, does a decent job if one of us remembers to empty the bin.

It's a love/hate relationship for sure!! I'm just glad to hear I'm not the only one... :)

Corgi's are the best dogs, but you have to be immune to hair!

I recently bought a robot vac (a Bobsweep) and it is programmed to run everyday. I'm amazed how well it works on the fur and litter--I have two dogs, two cats, and hardwood floors. I admit I was lazy before the robot vac. I used to turn on all the ceiling fans twice a week to blow the fur into the corners to make it easy to sweep up, then do a full vacuum every other week. Now I'm spoiled and will never be without a robot vac again.

I have 3 shedding dogs and have to at least spot sweep and vacuum high traffic areas like the family room and in front of the doors every day

I see that there are several questions about Roombas, and I'm surprised that there are so many pet owners who don't have one. I have depended on mine for several years, and I'll try to address several of the concerns. First, stairs are not a problem; the Roomba has a sensor that keeps it from going over the edge. Secondly, the Roomba is not ruined if it rolls through a pet mess, although I'll admit it is disgusting to clean a pet mess out of the Roomba. I keep an extra set of brushes that I can install in the Roomba while the dirty set soaks in bleach. I bought a model in the 700 series that came with all the bells and whistles, but I find that I tend to not use the extra features, like the virtual walls and lighthouse, so I would just buy the basic model if I were doing it again. I have it programmed to run everyday while I'm at work. Usually it parks itself back on the charger like it's supposed to, but sometimes it does get hung up on the base of the coat stand or my dress form stand. One thing that will ruin the Roomba is if the cat pees on the electronics. When this happened to me, I called tech support. They told me which parts to retrieve from the old machine for reuse. They sent me a new machine minus those parts for a discounted price. Overall I've been very happy with the product and service.

Vacuuming is part my morning routine before I go to work. I use a light cordless vacuum cleaner. It's not perfect but it keeps the house clean enough by running it every day.

We had a "German Sheddar" and had to vacuum everyday and then right before company. No dog now and I can go at least a week now, no problem. Miss our dog, but don't want another.

none ... will NEVER get a shedding dog. my bella is a havanese and i chose her after careful research on hypoallergenic breeds as not only am i a hygiene freak i also have asthma.

I have a bit of OCD but I get tired from working all day and sometimes I just do not feel like sweeping. Please someone tell me how you all do this every day or every other day because looking at this dog and cat hair makes me feel helpless when I'm not in the mood to do anything about it.

We just got a dog a few days afer Christmas - a mix from the county animal shelter who had been abandoned and our family fell in love at first sight. Vet says he's a red heeler and some kind of terrier. He hardly shed in the first weeks, and I was gleeful about that. Well, now the weather has warmed up and the way my house looks, my dog should be just about bald by now! I am very picky about how my house looks, and can't sit still and relax until the public areas are neat and tidy. This shedding has caused me to spend way more time with the Swiffer and the broom (all hardwood floors) but I am happy to do it because I am in love with this pooch! Dogs are worth every second of walking, pooperscoopering, cleaning, feeding, and brushing.

But don't get me started on what I see when the afternoon sun streams across the hardwoods - uggghh!

Everyday spot vacuum even with a robot. three hairy border collies and lots of leaves and grass.

I vacuum daily thanks to my DeBot robotic vacuum. All of our floors are hard surface and we have a long haired dog. Now our floors are clean enough for me to indulge my love of going barefoot.

I do run my robotic vacuum once daily. Our dog does not shed too much.

We have 2 golden doodles that shed like crazy. The fur was overwhelming. It was everywhere...including on the stove, microwave, etc. We purchased a Roomba and it was "life-changing." It is timed to vacuum when we are at work. It's amazing how much fur it picks up everyday. Best investment we ever made. Saving up to buy another one for the second floor.

I found a great dust mop from a company in Vermont. I dust mop daily (two dogs -basset/lab mix and short legged golden mix & 2 cats). Vacuum once a week, dogs and cats get brushed once a week

I have a Neato D80 robotic vac that is great. With a yellow lab, fur is everywhere
The Neato has a good sized dust bin and is very quiet. I am always amazed at how much it picks up, not only fur but dirt. My lab doesn't mind it at all where she didn't like a regular vac before. Sometime I have to tell her to 'Move, Johnny is coming!' This is my daughter's new Golden (another shedder) checking it out. I gave them one for Christmas!

I have a Sheltie who is almost finished throwing his coat for springtime. But since he is still shedding a bit, I vacuum everyday and sometimes also use a Bona dust mop in those hard to get to places. I also brush him everyday. Yes, this is in addition to having a day job. You just do it.

Once a week, maybe it depends on the dog you have though?

About once a week I vacuum. The variegated colors in the flooring hide fur pretty well, and although our dog and two cats shed, they don't shed profusely.

My dog does not shed, she has wool but she tends to loose some wool balls sometimes, so every other week is fine since she is not allowed in the bedrooms. I think that if you have a dog, you have to be relax about the whole cleaning process and do not get obsessive about it, if not you will feel miserable !

I think i'd go crazy if I had to vacuum every day to be very honest.

I have four indoor cats and am thinking about getting a Roomba. But have some questions. How quickly does the Roomba generally fill up and need to be emptied? My cats have their toys scattered around the house (small balls, catnip mice, etc.) as well as throw up a hairball occasionally - what does a Roomba do when it encounters such? I'd appreciate your advice!

olsenla, my pet population is comparable to yours, and my Roomba needs to be emptied about every 3 days. Cat toys get stuck in the brushes and either cause the Roomba to roll with a clunk, or sometimes they cause an error message that stops the Roomba until you remove the object. Hairballs do the same if they're dry. If the Roomba picks up a wet hairball, or a turd, it will draw circles on the floor with it, leading to one of life's bleachable moments. I mentioned before that I keep an extra set of brushes for these mishaps. I also keep a seam ripper dedicated solely to the Roomba for removing pet hair from the rollers, which has to be done once or twice a week.

180 pound Irish Wolfhound. Furminator every day. Hand strip as he will tolerate. Luckily, Hubby and I have a high degree of dirt / hair "blindness". It's really not the fur that's the problem. Big Puppy tends to Hansel & Gretel his kibble throughout the house...sounds like a .22 when you step on it.

I have wood look tile with an area rug around the couch. The floor gets thoroughly cleaned once or twice a week, but I use the Roomba daily. The dog doesn't like it, but he doesn't freak out, just gets up quietly and leaves the room until it's done. I can control by my iPhone, so it cleans while I am at work. It has to be emptied every day because the dust bin is gets full after one round of cleaning.

It's the cats, not the dog. I swiffer every day & vaccum every other. I had to laugh @ the Roomba & the hair balls. Nothing worse than getting up in the morning & stepping in a hair ball!

Depends on the breed of bog and how bad allergies are.

I sweep or Swiff every day, vacuum maybe every three days. I can Swiff an hour after vacuuming and still pick up a load. Two short hair mutts that shed tons.

Ya know, after reading all these posts, I am getting a robosweeper for next fall for my all tile floor house. I wonder how they do with palmetto bugs?

Looks like a lot of people go the robo-vac route! After a year with our collie now we've just come to accept the hair. To everyone who's commented so far I never thought this thread would still be going strong!

I have two shedding dogs. I use my Miele once a week & activate the Neato twice a week to prevent my dogs hair tumbleweeds.

My dog is a Malti-poo, a mix between a Maltese and toy poodle, and she is hypo-allergenic, so she doesn't shed. We are very happy to have a non-shedding dog, so we only vacuum twice a month.

Late to the party, but was amused to see the photo features a Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier, which is the breed of dog we have. They are as close to being a non-shedding breed as you can get (except for a Mexican Hairless, perhaps). I sweep daily and mop and vacuum twice a week...not because of our dog, but because of our three long-haired cats!

Our lab does not shed much. Dog hair is not generally an issue on carpet, but tends to pool up around the corners on our hard flooring. We sweep once per week. The bag in our Miele has been in there for 6 weeks and is almost full.

I have an older model Roomba that doesn’t seem to do much anymore (and often just pushes fur around on my large area rug), so I’ve switched to using my Dyson v7 cordless (it’s amazing!) every other day. Our hand-scraped hardwoods are beautiful but very dark and textured, so by the second day you can already see a coating of our Bassett mix’s white fur along the surface.

I pull out our upright Shark for a deep vaccuum maybe once a month.

Wonder if the newer Roombas would do a better job?

Rule of thumb is twice a week per pet.. so if you have 2 indoor pets that would be 4 times a week and so on.

I have two cats and two dogs. One dog has hair and I've never seen one of his hairs shed. One dog is a yorkiechon and she sheds like crazy. My one cat barely sheds and my kitten sheds like crazy. Coincidentally, my males don't shed, my females do! Anyway, I vacuum twice a day. I have a light weight inexpensive handheld vacuum that does the job well (Moosoo 17k, Pergo flooring & area rugs). It takes me less than 10 minutes to vacuum my entire downstairs level (1800 sq ft home). My animals don't spend a lot of time upstairs so I vacuum upstairs (Shark corded vacuum, builder grade carpeting throughout) 1-2 times per week. I mop every Friday. I'm a SAHM now but even when I did work I vacuumed a lot. I like a clean floor! When I mop I use my O'Cedar mop and bucket. I add 4 oz. of whichever Odoban I have on hand to the water, 8 pumps, mop floors. They dry super fast, my floors are clean, and my house doesn't smell like cats and dogs. :-)

Glad to hear. I swear by Odoban. You can pretty much use it on any surface/item in your house. It's fantastic to use on pet accidents. It disinfects and is an odor killer. I prefer the Fresh Linen scent but I've tried them all. They're great products. I think a $10 concentrated gallon makes 32 gallons of cleaner. Something like that. Feel free to research all of the products and watch YouTube videos on them. I like to read the Amazon reviews and watch videos when I have free time. :-) If you don't feel like using products you can always just use 4 oz. of vinegar in your mop bucket. I do that once a month or so. The house wreaks for a few hours though!

I don't like vinegar on floors either, and it is not good, really, for wood floors which is what I have. Since vinegar is an acid, it breaks down the finish on the surface of the floor, and over time it will reduce the shine and leave a dull appearance. I tend to use Bona cleaners.
