Hi guys. I'm getting married and both my fiance and I each have one young boy, ages 5 and 8. Both boys are used to being only children. And now they will be put in a 10 by 10 room together. This floor plan of the apartment throws me off because one whole wall is a closet and then the wall a joining it actually has a small window that is not seen in the floor plan. I would like to arrange beds somehow so that the window isn't blocked so they both can look out the window anytime. just not sure what direction to go. I welcome any design ideas.

Diamondshadow, congrats up your upcoming marriage and all the best for building a family together. The constraints of the room will not permit both boys to have equal access to the window without other compromises that I cannot recommend.

Rather, I would construct an island of sorts. A rough sketch is attached showing two "true" 39" twin beds set on storage units (Ikea has great ones) to create a large and deep opening beneath--great for a "fort" or storage for sports equipment, etc.. A 16" deep shelving unit provides a play space at mattress height with variable shelves above accessible from each side. The unit is placed against a 10" deep shelf arrangement with enclsed storage under each lamp. Each boy has ample storage, some private space as well as play space when they are in the mood. I recommend a closed centre panel at the pillow so that they have a sense of privacy when going to sleep, and otherwise, open spaces to allow good light and air transference.

Well, my original thought was parallel beds similar to what acm said.

But, honestly, I think GN Builders/linlac have it right with cornering the beds, leaving space in the center of the room. I'd lean more towards GN builders...I like how there is some space between the two beds...the boys don't need to be right up against each other.

Even if one bed overlaps the window a bit, this might fulfill your requirements.

Could you do a loft bed on the window wall? Then create a seating area underneath by the window.

I like the idea of the raised beds with storage underneath. You will love the storage, especially with 2 boys. You could do that and put the beds in an L-shape along the walls. That gives them lots of play space and no need for dressers, especially with that big closet.

Each boy could do whatever they want under it; futon, desk, bean bag etc

Just to clarify, I agree that the boys will want their own sense of space--hence the unit between the beds which effectively creates a separate room for each (as their "stuff" is stored) while avoiding an actual wall that divides the room. Lots of great ideas in this thread - solutions will depend in part on wheher you can bring in help or on how handy you may be. Perhaps share the ideas with the boys and let them help shape their own room (a recommended effort ;-)

I've never used loft beds but always worried that they'd fall or jump out. I guess that's not a big problem, either because they don't do it or because they don't hurt themselves when they do?
