Too wet here, with rain forecast for Friday. I won't be doing much except clean up this weekend.

getting restless, too wet here in SF bay area , i started my seeds, seedling are getting big, thinking I would plant them as usual , considering larger temporary pots until I can get them in the ground or they may have to be container veggies

We haven't been quite as wet here in the inland area of the SF bay area as other areas in the bay area. We have downpours of rain, then hours of sunshine. Lots of rainbows. Not bad for planting as long as you have good boots.

Great for pulling up weeds.

The last couple of days have had heavier downpours in my area though. It is definitely a good test to see how good the drainage is in the yard. So far so good.

Here the drainage is sharp and the soil is light. Takes a whole lot of rain to make things soggy. Not enough yet.

I'm planting, digging, moving plants, weeding, pruning. I love winter!

Too wet here in the SFV to do much, plus lack of time. I did plant out a bareroot Fuyu persimmon, but that's about it. Hope to get out there Saturday, but we are expecting rain Friday.

i guess i shouldn't complain too much no more drought, now if only the gophers would swim away

Just soaked..and Hayward is actually one of the drier bay area climates. The last time I used a hose was in November?...this might be a personal record!

83 in inland San Diego...a blizzard of epic proportions in Boston..So i guess the bay area is in the middle- mild,but lots of rain.

Yesterday was very warm down here in SD, but today is nice and cool, plus we are supposed to catch the edge of the storm moving up your way.

We're supposed to have rain overnight but I don't think very much. Every drop is welcome, though! I walked the garden this morning and will pick some broccoli and tomatoes for dinner before the rain starts. Other than weed pulling and pickng veggies I'm just watching the seedlings under lights in the laundry room grow. Not much to do for the next couple of weeks and then it'll be time to pull the old tomato plants and put the new ones in the ground.

It's wet out there, and I covered a couple pots with plastic as they have had enough for now. I'm loving every drop, but the patio is getting slimy. Hope it dries out in a few days. Also put out slug bait, hoed some weeds which thought they were going to grow here.

Sunshine seems so wonderful after all the rain! Wish I had some way to store all that comes off the roof. Very wishful thinking as I would need to turn my entire property into storage and I still wouldn't have enough to water through our dry summers.

Heard news reports that Lexington Dam exceeds its safety capacity and they have to release water. Oroville dam is in danger of overflowing and they are releasing water as fast as they can. Too much water when we can't use it and not enough when we do.

Everything that can hold water or carry water around me in this part of the bay area is. All the "Dry Creeks"..are running and nicest waterfalls I've ever seen from them. Usually its a trickle at best. Puddles beside streets..little ponds. In Niles,fresh brand new quaint picturesque waterfalls...never saw them once in the ten years of daily driving..just sprouting high out of the sides of the hills. Meaning I guess they can't hold anymore.

I've had a touch plant rot here and there. Nothing much.

Think about it- its been raining - heavy rains too- for every month since October. FIVE months!..No reason March and April wont be wet either.

I've lived here since 1973. Can't remember a winter with so much regular rain. Wish I'd kept records so I could look back. I've collected almost 34" in my rain gauge so far, WAY over normal. Still, if March and April continue wet, I'm all for it. So far my low lying property has handled it all well. My only worry is whether the touchy new Echinaceas can successfully overwinter in the soggy wet clay soil they are planted in.

and after Wednesday, its going to start again.

I was hoping we'd have a few more days of sunshine because I have a few more roses to prune and I don't want to stand on that heavy wet soil to prune them. Oh well, they'll have to wait....

Friday's forecast is for the worst storm in the Los Angeles area in 10-20 years. Mud slides and debris flows.

My plants are drunk now. ;) Actually, it was the wind that was the most concern in my area. Large trees were falling onto the roads.

Maridol Papaya- 3 years old..is a near goner. After that,I can't see any real problems with all the rains. Knock on wood. Rained hard last night,more harder rain tonight they say.

I've got 3.75" in my rain gauge from this rain and the last rain. That's about 36" of rain so far. Amazing.

I also have some drunken plants - lol - garlic is leaning over, broken stem on a tall cilantro (going to seed), and snow peas with bent/broken stems. My Mexican papaya don't show any signs of distress but I have read that they don't like cold, wet feet so wondering if they will show it later.

All raised beds here, so it's more a question of is it too wet for the gardener! :-) I don't love being damp and cold, so keep putting off any outdoor garden chores. Have a goal of getting out with the weed torch as in my area we're constantly battling star thistle (ugh!!) and thistle seed is sensitive to heat (and I can't use the torch much after April as it would be too easy to burn down my neck of Stanislaus National Forest). Have some areas I have to go over before I can plant the new beds. It's been below snow line the last batch of storms so very soggy.

How much has your soil line dropped in the raised beds Maggie? I noticed that in my deeper beds the soil line has lowered about 4-6 inches from all this rain. Gonna try to fill it back in today with extra organic matter then mulch.

Biggest storm of the year headed for the bay area and beyond tonight and Monday. Oh boy.

Hi Cori Ann - When beds are first built a lot of us use mulch mixed in - that decomposes and shrinks a lot (really a LOT) as it does, so that could be it. Usually new beds have to be refilled. Problem is with trees and shrubs you don't want soil to come up on the trunks - I'm running into that as in one bed I thought I planted them high enough for the expected later soil shrinkage and refill but I do wish they were a bit higher to be safe. Be very careful working wet soil - most folks say don't but I do it just being very gentle to not compress it at all.

I pulled about 10 pounds of weeds yesterday.

I am relentless in hunting down Cardamine oligosperma - Spotweed, Shotweed - by any name, the most obnoxious little garden weed I know! This one that spits its seeds everywhere if you don't find it before it goes to seed.:

I've actually made quite a lot of progress against this one because I have been pretty zealous in hunting them. But they like to hide and the young seedlings can bloom when they are ultra tiny and they are so easy to miss. I managed to find several today, but that's all the weeding I did.

I am looking forward to getting a couple hedge bushes planted before work sometime this week but haven't been able to do much in the garden lately due to all this rain. Thankfully the weeds pull out easy as I have plenty of them with all the rain.

Well, a few years back my double fence panel 6 foot tall gate blew off the fence and into the middle of the road (and that sucker was heavy - two 8 foot fence panels that locked in the middle). So, with them forecasting the strong winds for later this afternoon - I've been out moving the winter sowing jugs and plant shelves to more protected spots.

It's absolutely pouring rain again! Two days ago my husband dumped our rain gauge with 3.75" of rain from a few days ago. Now only two days later at sunset it was reading 4". But it's pouring again and I fear our 5" capacity rain gauge will overflow. I just cannot believe how much rain we have had! Lots of local road closures due to mudslides and downed trees and power lines, and creeks are really running high and fierce but nothing really catastrophic so far.

Everything is so wet. Every little low spot puddles and holds water instead of disappearing into the soil. My property is low lying and the neighboring property is a little lower and is flooded in parts. Only once has my property flooded and that was when our neighbors let their major drain get blocked. Hopefully all is well there right now, but it's too dark and wet so I don't want to check on that.

Hoping others are staying safe and dry.

Supposedly we'll have no rain until late Saturday.

It's finally stopped raining here. I took a flashlight and checked my rain gauge. It's at about 5". Can hardly believe this much rain. Next rain forecast is for next Monday. That'll give us a good chance to dry out some.

Thankfully things are starting to dry out a bit here. We won't have any further rain till Sunday but it's been a crazy month.

Here in an interior LA valley up against the foothills we have had 8.7" in December, 20" in January and 11" so far in February according to our raingauge.

The lychee tree is happy and the wild violets I planted will hopefully do well now.

The tree ferns also appreciate the weather.

This nice spot of warm weather is very much appreciated after all the cold wet weather. Last weekend I put an unused garbage bin under the roof drip line. The storm filled it to the brim! I'll be using it to water my plants this summer, but probably not any of my edibles.

The winds dried us out enough to plant. Weeds are everywhere!

Oh yeah, Kitty, I hear you about the weeds! Fewer weeds and appreciation for water conservation are definitely the good things about the drought. Who knows, it could be 6 more years or more before we have another wet winter.

Couple of 80 degree days for us have dried things quite a bit, but no plans to start watering yet. A few aphids on the sprouting roses. I want to get some serious mulch out to retain that ground moisture. Spent an hour or two weeding, mostly annual grass and oxalis, but a few I don't recognize.

Is there a prize to be awarded? If so, we win it up here...over 71" at last count several days ago and we here know that they're not telling us the truth, cuz we have had more than that...and it's raining right now and I do believe it's supposed to for the next however many days in a row coming up. Most nights that it doesn't rain, we have heavy frosts, so it will be interesting to see what makes it through and what doesn't.
