I think your plan sounds fine but you'll probably get many different views. I looked at your ideabooks. I'd like to suggest that you choose Houzz Kitchen photos, then search using the words Black Appliances. Save any of the kitchen photos you like, then focus on the details in the photos to determine how the look came together as a cohesive whole.

I'd also research white glass backsplashes since I've read some threads where the white didn't turn out as expected. Good luck with your project!

Painting your cupboards gray is going to limit your wall colors. How about white cabinets with a counter top and backsplash that incorporates white, black, and gray?

Here are two possible outcomes (as I see it, anyway!) of what you're proposing:

Agree with black and white.

Slight tweak to your plan: dark gray on lowers, white on uppers. May integrate the appliances more and result in a less-fragmented look.

Is that stainless behind your range? What about using metallic tiles on your backsplash to pull that in as well?

a vote against white cabinets and black appliances. (an equal vote against white appliances with dark cabinets. too much contrast along a cabinet run makes the space look choppy.)

That is a pretty picture but think before you "move into it" for real if you live in a climate of cloudy / gray or snowy days.

I live in Colorado where we have 300 sunny days a year. I just don't know what to do with black appliances… Black-and-white just seems too much of a contrast for me.

Oh I love the gray cabinet photo above with the black appliances. Cool and different. Everyones kitchens look the same now. I would never had guessed that would look cool. Must post after photos. I like the very pale gray. Don't go too intense on the gray.

Thank you. What do you think about a backsplash? I am getting rid of that cheap piece of stainless behind the stove. I was thinking either white glass which I guess I need to investigate more or a gray white subway tile type.

Everybody should do what they like. If I had black appliances and wanted to paint, I might go a bit green / gray for a warmer look.

Ashley, if you like the idea of gray cabinets, go for it. A soft, dove gray might be nice with the white quartz countertops with a bit of gray veining. Then you could choose a backsplash that works with everything.

Ashley, just to give you an idea of white cabinets with black appliances. Of course your countertop would be different.

The countertop in Michelle's second pic looks like a good fit with black appliances.

Ashley, sounds like you really like the grey cabinets if the countertop has grey in it I don't see why you can't do it. Keep in mind, we all give our opinions but you have to do what you want because you are going to live with it.

Thank you for saying that! I am just so bummed I am stuck with black appliances for now.... I just think grey will tone down the black.

I also think it could work with some gray in the countertops, but I would keep it a light gray formthe cabinets.

The lower paint is for the cabinets in the upper color is for the walls.

Ashley your inspiration picture has less of a contrast between the paint and the cabinets, is that what your looking for? If so, the two colors you posted have more of a contrast.

Oh, okay. Didn't want you to be disappointed. I know what your going through, I also had black appliances that were in good shape so I couldn't justify getting new ones.

I didn't want to cabinets to disappear in the wall color. I want my walls light but not white. I hope it looks good at the end.

cautionary tale:

i lived with a bisque fridge in an otherwise 100% redone kitchen for 3 years... it was a sore thumb but when it finally died i bought a ss fridge and had the exact kitchen i wanted.

had i gone with the bisque in other finishes at the redo, the fridge would have died and i would have had an unwanted bisque friendly kitchen left over... so...

there is a point when it doesnt make sense to have new things go with a bad old things. do the kitchen the way you want it done, the appliances will die... they always do. some faster than you might like.

When we moved into our home 3 years ago the kitchen appliances were all stainless EXCEPT one of the wall ovens was white. It was a pretty nice Jenn-Air oven but looked really ridiculous. First thing I did was replace it. The Jenn-Air went to Habitat for Humanity which made me feel less guilty.

Our appliances died exactly when they were 10 yrs old. Had to replace even the garbage disposal. Salesman sailed if they didn't die in8-10 yrs they would be out of business. Duh!

But my friend has black appliances and just got a new countertop this week. Caeserstone I think. The Silesstone Quartz we got 18 mos ago is Lyra and reminds me of Carreras marble.

glschisler, they just don't make appliances like they used to. We had a Whirlpool washing machine last exactly 4 1/2 years. I was beyond angry! At least now I know NOT to expect the years appliances gave us years ago.

Ok. So I'm not sure if people are interested but this is what I have done with my kitchen so far.

One more. The cabinets are gray. I'm thinking my wall color is going to have to be white with maybe a little bit of light gray tones.
