Holly, there are platinum or putty grays, blue-grays, green-grays and straight off grays. There are taupes that are named gray (since it is very popular today to use gray, they renamed some too!) If you are painting a bedroom, and you just want a straight gray to use with white or cream, test Light French Gray . . . and paint some piece of furniture Classic French Gray to layer the hues.

Usually, however, there are some color tones already selected or built into stone or brick or woodwork, and finding the right gray is up to testing them in your space, at your latitude, with the reflections of whatever else you've got going on. Better to choose soft goods (fabrics) first, then find the gray that works best with it since it is easier to pick paint to go with soft goods than the other way around.

We are building new construction and chose Online for the whole house but when I did a sample it turned out too dark. We are doing dark almost black cabinets, white trim and dark wood floors. I am going to paint store tomorrow to buy more samples. Hoping to get some ideas of what is some popular grays.

Holly - all paint looks different in different light - so my advise would be to paint samples of greys on A3 size artists paper to take into each room and look at them on each wall - our home looks the same base colour throughout - but there's actually 3 different versions going on to get that effect as the light changes so much around my home !! You will live with the paint for a long time - so its worth spending a bit of time getting it right !!

SW 7064 Passive or 7661 Reflection for a small, darkish living room?

Here's SW Sedate Gray in my hallway... I LOVE it. Like most grays it changes color throughout the day but this one is so warm. It goes sagey green to soft gray to /almost/ beige (but not!).
