I think he's right..I love a comment I heard from a horticultural professor..talked about vinegar, salt etc so called "natural" remedies..he said rattlesnake venom is "natural"..want to use that?..just pull the weeds and save your soil..

If I do use it maybe just add a little. We don't want to harm wildlife or plants outside the area. It is just overwhelming having almost 2 acres.

Just remember that the Romans salted the fields of their enemies so that nothing would ever grow there and use caution. I'm a fan of the torch weeders, although you do have to hit tap rooted weeds a few times (and because of fire danger, mine gets put away at the end of April and doesn't come out again until Nov).

Knowing me I would set the entire town on fire! That must be what my husband was referring to as he talked about ancient civilizations being destroyed. Wonder why it is even brought up in home made remedies if so dangerous?

I wouldn't..I have half an acre and even that is overwhelming so I understand..pull what you can..my suggestion - plant as many plants as you can..groundcovers will choke out the weeds..and look pretty..

Many home remedies are new gardeners who haven't been in the same spot for years or they may not understand why certain plants start dying despite their best efforts (but horrid weed killing practices and they don't make the connection). Use caution with any home remedies found on the web. That said, I do use dish soap for aphids - but awhile back you could still find recipes on the university sites for it.

Salt will eventually run off to other parts of your garden, so it is not recommended. Vinegar may appear to kill weeds quickly, but for most weeds, it just turn the leaves brown and the weed regrows a short time later. Vinegar with a high enough acidity to kill the weeds would burn your skin.

Gah not this homemade herbicide nonsense again.

Better it periodically come up than all those Pinterest folks run off salting their soil. Some of the stuff on there is sooooo horrible.
