What's the nature of the crap? Different kinds of stuff call for different storage solutions.

If you need deep storage keep it on the end walls. How do you enter the room? Any windows?

Search Houzz for "narrow closet office" - lots of ideas. One cute little office has a daybed at the end with storage underneath. I think you could still put storage on the long walls, if it's at least six feet wide - provided you have some kind of open space (no top cupboards) where your desk is. Imagine it like a short hallway with storage on the sides, leading to a very small (but better proportioned) office at the end?

The space is 8' wide by 10.5' long. Doorway is on left corner. far right wall is 1/2 taken up by another doorway to a sound booth so that area is restricted. left wall has an AC unit mounted high on the wall. No windows and inadequate ventilation. Currently using a large IT desk (3 levels, bottom shelf for computer, large surface in the middle, narrow top shelf for monitors) and an armoire with a curtain covering the opening. Sounds like big desk needs to go.

It sounds as though you would do better with a built-in system that maximizes counter space and storage in place of your existing office furniture. Using open shelves, a couple of stock desk height drawer cabinets and a laminated top will streamline your office and maximize storage without overwhelming the space. I have attached a very simple floor plan based on my understanding of your room description. If I'm off a bit, you can at least see the concept and take it from there. You may want to install a ceiling fan to move the air in addition to your AC. Are you on the 2nd floor? Is there a possibility of a skylite? Be sure you have good lighting and access to outlets above and below the counter surface.

@Scott Design: That's amazing! You nailed my space with surprising accuracy from my description. I'll post a more accurate drawing soon. I have some ideas already that I want to play with. After some deep thought I've concluded that I'll have to lose the furniture too. Building a desk surface myself will maximize space. Now I'm trying to decide how, how deep, and where to place shelves. Want the space to looks neat, modern, and elegant.

Based on what you've suggested and I've seen here at Houzz I'm thinking of building a desk/shelf onto the front wall and using lots of shelf space to organize the rest behind me.

Can you reconfigure your sound booth and use the entire front to back space incorporating file cabinet nook and put the door as indicated in my sketch? As you can see door location is critical for this office space. This allows for a large expanse of uninterrupted surface area that will satisfy neat, modern and elegant. Btw, a working desk with typical computer monitors can be 25" to 30" deep. Is your drawing to scale?

I cannot reconfigure my sound booth - it's pretty perm. My drawing is to scale, I realized as I was drawing that my space is only 7' x 10.6' + the file cabinet nook. The desk I've drawn is 27" deep. I'm now thinking of scraping the 2 shelves under the AC unit and building a bench seat that spans that wall. It will have dual lift lids with nice cushions and inside will be storage organized by hanging/sliding trays. That will give me more space to invite guests to sit and talk (or me lie down when I run out of steam) and it's only 7" deep. I'm also considering hanging a really nice curtain over 1/3 of the back wall shelves to hide junk and enhance the elegance. I've ordered subtle LED lighting strips to illuminate the shelves. Complete with dimmer. InspiredLED is awesome!

Instead of a curtain, consider a couple of sliding lattice panels or soji screens which will allow your LED lighting to come through. It will diminish the look of clutter but allow light to subtlety illuminate the room visually keeping the space open. The sliding panels cab be tucked into the filing cabinet space. You can then get lateral files and place them under the lowest shelf

I do like the idea/look of the soji screens. I'm envisioning 2 panels on rails hanging from the ceiling. Each panel will cover 1/3 of the length of my back wall shelves. You can slide the panels to cover any 2/3 of that space or slide them to overlap and reveal 2/3. You're absolutely right about the lighting effect with a soji panels. I'm excited!
