iPad Case Question

For those of you with iPads: I'm thinking about getting the big iPad Pro, and what I really want to go with it is a purse/case that lets you use the ipad while it's still in there, while also holding your personal gear like a phone, credit cards, cash, etc.

I had the original Happy Owl Studio clutch, and it was great, but shoddily made, and then Sena made one called the Borsetta that was similar, but neither have been made for recent ipads.

Happy Owl:

Sena:

As a musician, I loved this case because when you're playing in public venues they never want a lot of junk around your performance area, and with this clutch I just got to the gig, unclipped the strap and put it away with my instrument case, and plunked the clutch itself down on the music stand. The "stuff" side zips closed so it looked tidy, and all my music is in ForScore on the iPad, so it was a big improvement over a binder full of tunes.

I always had my stuff where I could keep an eye on it and never needed to worry about my purse being dumped in an unlocked drawer in a store, for instance. Unfortunately, the Happy Owl was badly made and didn't last very long and they never updated the design past the ipad 2. The Sena was unpopular because it was so sleek it didn't have room anything deeper than a comb, I guess.

I would dearly love to find an equivalent to these for the 12" iPad pro. I've trolled around on Etsy and all, but there are just so darned many to sort through.

Does anyone here know of an iPad purse like that that works with the current versions?

To me, that's turning an iPad into a laptop and all that goes with it. All I use is the magnetic cover sold by Apple. It will fit in my handbag or a tote if I need to transport it.

If I needed a whole lot of other stuff for business, I'd buy something else. As far as also using it for a purse, well, I think that would be very dangerous. An iPad is a highly desirable object. If they steal mine, at least it's just an iPad and I can use Find My iPad to disable it. I would not want to also lose my wallet and credit cards.

    All personal preference....

I agree with Anglo. Keep your device and personal items separate.

Thanks to both of you, but it's not practical. You cannot use a laptop on a music stand and there isn't nearly such nice software for organizing and reading music as there is for iOS. Also, I would have to carry a very heavy clunky stand if I wanted to do that, and it can't come in nearly as close as a regular music stand because of the keyboard, besides looking terrible. Also, I'd have to turn every half page because laptop software isn't designed for the computer to run sideways, so you can only see half a page of music at a time with most of those programs. I find the suggestion kind of puzzling, to tell the truth. The idea that needing to bring a phone, keys, credit card, and a comb is "a whole lot of other stuff" confuses me. Don't you need those things when you go anywhere in your car?

All I want is a case that can also serve as a small clutch for valuables like a phone and credit cards. You don't seem to realize that there is usually no safe place to put valuables on jobs in public locations like stores and restaurants, unless you keep it right at your feet, which clients often don't care for.

In the pre-internet days it didn't matter so much, because smart thieves knew that a musician wasn't worth robbing, but these days a smartphone, for instance, is a very tempting target to anyone. I don't happen to have one, but they're going to grab the bag first and find that out later.

Actually, nobody ever realized it was also my ipad if I stopped in the store on the way home, since the sides opened separately. People did often comment on what a cute little purse it was and that was all.

Just want to add the comment that if you wish to use the Pro with the smart keyboard attached, you cannot have it in any case that I've found other than the standard Apple silicone back.

Have you looked at Levenger? I have always been impressed with their leather goods and the clever bags and storage features they have. I think I understand your needs, and I'm not positive they have what you are looking for, but worth browsing their site.

I have a case made by cocoon (can't remember where I bought it online) for my MacBook Air. I like to have generous outside pockets for power cords, an external device, etc, and this fit my needs.

Ooh, thanks, lukki. I'll check that out.

Yes, that's a concern, Fun2BHere, but I don't use a keyboard at all on a gig, just an airturn for turning pages so my hands can keep playing. (That travels in a pocket of my harp case, so not a consideration for choosing an ipad case.)

Thanks, outsideplaying. I haven't thought of Levenger in a long time, but they did use to have some gorgeous things. I'll give them a look.

If you search eBay for iPad bag or clutch etc there's a lot of stuff in various prices and styles.

    Custom iPad case.

    Cute

    Thanks, Fun2BHere and ravencajun.

Fun2B, that's the same seller as the clutch, so I'm planning to contact them and see if they can't do something that's like a combination of both.

Thanks, everyone. It's great to know I may be able to find someone who can make what I want. Outsideplaying, your mention of Levenger has made me very nostalgic. They used to make a simply luscious laptop briefcase. My publisher's layout editor had a lavender one that I deeply coveted, but since I hardly ever took a laptop anywhere back in those days, I just couldn't justify the cost. :)
