to keep the fireplace or not to keep... help!

We just bought a darling bungalow style home that needs a lot of help. My first dilemma is weather or not to keep the fireplace. It sits right in the center of the tiny living room. Literally the only place to put a t.v. would be right in that spot...( I am not a fan of t.v.'s over the mantle). If we do decide to keep it we will clearly have to redo it... (it's pretty ugly) But what I'd like to know is your opinion on giving up the charm and character (if we redo it it will be charming) is worth it to have a nice spot for a t.v. we would possibly do a built in with shelving etc in that spot and maybe even window seats next to it. So.... keep it and fix it up? or get rid of it and add built in's. (We live in MO. so we do have winters... but they are not very harsh) Thanks, Kelly

Just on the other side of this picture is the dining room.. then the kitchen. The dining room stares where the beam is on the ceiling. Just to give some perspective...

What is across from the fireplace, is there a wall that maybe you can use for a TV?

It's a pretty small room... you can see the front door... there is basically a wall right next to that door so that space will sort of be an entry or walkway area. like the door is basically the edge of the room.

Keep it. It is a darling bungalow in part because of the fireplace. Any chance you can use a small bedroom for a dedicated TV room?

reba120 I did think of that... there is a room in the back that we want to make into a den/library... maybe we just make the front room more of a reading room and put the t.v in the back room? here is a picture of the back room... we will be adding wood floors and probably just painting the paneling. The t.v. could go on those shelves??? or we could take the shelves out??? you can see a lot of work needs to be done... I can't wait to get my hands on it...

Somewhat similar to my first home. We placed the tv on a stand off to the side of the fireplace. Of course it wasn't a huge tv - after all, it is not a huge room.

A larger tv would work in the den.

yes, leave it there and make that room more formal: music rm, parlor, library, one or all.

It's a typical bungalow floor plan, exactly like mine. I eschewed the TV in the living room, then eschewed the TV altogether. Of course, if you have a husband, you'd probably have to eschew him to do that. ;-)

I absolutely would keep the fireplace, place a sofa facing it to create an entry from the front door, and put chairs on either end.

Count me in for keeping the fireplace -- and so glad to know you're not a fan of TV's above it.. A smaller TV (40" or less) to the side of the fireplace would be the way I'd go.-- on a low console. And I'd put a TV in the room because it's fun to watch on a cold day when you have a fire going. Have fun!

Yes yes yes! Keep fireplace and use front room for family time, relaxation, and lively discussions! Convert that back room to the TV room. Much more civilized!

Removing the FP will devalue the home.

Place the TV on an entry cabinet/table. If necessary you can add doors to cover the TV when not in use.

There are indications in the floor that a set of bookcases or half walls were taken out. Does it make sense to put them back in?

I vote for TV in the back den. You can easily take a few shelves out to make room and get the proper wiring back there.

For the front room, It is nicely suited as a sitting room. Four good sized chairs would work out perfectly, with a round coffee table. I can see a pretty chandelier centered over the coffee table, reflected in a beautiful mirror about the mantle.

If you like the look, the wood look tile in a Herringbone pattern would be smashing on the fireplace.

What a darling home!! Make sure to share your after pictures!!
