I agree with lukkiirish's suggestions. You could also consider a chandelier over the table. Is there another wall in the room, or is it open to another space?

Can the table go in the other direction, that would give more room to move around. Also what is on the wall where the lamps are? I can't see it but it's drawing the eye to it as it's so out of proportion to what should be there which is a tall rectangular art piece . Regarding your art and candles, that wall would look so much better with a large piece of art with no black border.

Definitely a rug, it can be polypropylene which is easy to clean. The art does need to be reconsidered and a chandelier of some kind would really help. Your space has possibilities, but it needs more color and life, and the painting just doesn't do anything for this space.

Pretty room. I like the calm vibe. The sconces and picture are all too small and hung too high. I'd replace the candles on the table with a large colored glass bowl.

I'm no interior designer but there's a few changes I'd do to make your pretty dining area more dramatic let's say. First (like someone else here mentioned) I'd put a chandelier above the table (preferably with a dimmer). I would then remove the 2 table lamps altogether. I would remove your starburst mirror over the buffet and replace with a larger framed mirror. You could leave the candlesticks there but I would add a pretty decorative bowl or vase underneath the mirror. Maybe lower the sconces or replace them with a different style. I would put a pretty Oriental style rug under the table for sure. Maybe a pretty runner placed on the table there. Just my 2 cents.

I'm a functional decoration person. I like the starburst mirror, but unless you do a lot of dining by candlelight, you don't need lamp AND candles on the buffet. You could put a wine rack there or bowl of fruit or pot pourri or silver tea set, or some china pitcher, soup tureen, etc., whatever you have that is pretty and you might use occasionally and is worth keeping in there. Then, what the others have said, reconsider that art on the wall, it is too high and so are the candle lamps. Of course a chandelier would be great, but if not, add a glitzy runner to the table maybe, and as others have said, a carpet to define the space, unless you are a slob like me. In that case, snazzy table linens.

I agree with the others. I think the wall decorations are a bit off scale. An ornate mirror hung vertically or horizontally would work nicely above the buffet but needs to be a large one. It looks like taupe and light blue are your colors. I think the room could use some more weight to it by introducing another color. That could easily be accomplished with different lamp shades perhaps a taller tapered one in a coral, red, or other color that would work with a new rug or artwork considering you want to keep existing lamps. Does the table match the buffet? I can't tell if it is part of a set. If not, I think something needs to be done with the table. I would consider darkening the dining room legs and frame to match the chair legs. You could even paint the table white. I would remove all candles and sconces. Your starburst could be moved to where your picture is or lay the starburst in the center of the table. The picture could be placed on an easel elsewhere. It is a wonderful room.

Everyone has given such good advice. The room is very pretty. I agree with others that the scale of the art mirror are too small. The lamps are quite large compared to the small sconces. A more substantial piece of art would look great. I'm picturing a cream or off white jacquard table runner and a floral arrangement on the buffet.

Pretty room and I like the paint color. Definitely think you need a larger piece of art on the longer wall. I'm not a fan of a large mirror anywhere near where I'm eating. Some people don't like to watch themselves eating, so I'd either leave the starburst above the console or put the smaller piece of art there. The sconces do appear to be too high, so I'd play with a piece of art first and then think about whether you need those or not. Especially if you can hang a chandelier above the table. Would prefer to see a chandelier.

I also agree the lamps are too large, so I'd replace those with something smaller. Also, would take the candles off the console and put a low bowl or something different there (I'm just picky about 2 sources of light in the same spot).

Try to bring in another color, either with the item in the center of the console, the colors used in new artwork, or candles used in the centerpiece. You might even find a pretty table runner that has another complementary color to use. Coral or spring green would be pretty but you could change it up if you like.

My guess is that you have purchased the lamps specifically for the dining room. They're very pretty and their color works well with the rest of your furnishings. While they may be somewhat large for the buffet, I don't think they're a deal breaker or a huge problem. Perhaps replace the candles on the dining table with the candlesticks now on the buffet. I'm not a fan of table runners myself. Not sure I'd want to bring in another color into the room either. To me, the real elephant in the room is the long wall. You need a much larger piece of art (hung lower). Not sure you need lanterns on that wall (too much symmetry with the 2 lamps in what appears to be a somewhat small space).

Yes, I am one of those people who does not like to watch themselves eat! I like mirrors to give the impression of another window or a doorway to a larger space, but that doesn't look like it is needed here.

The only plus I can say about table runners and placemats on dining room tables, is they allow you to snazz/freshen up the room a little every couple of months. I have a spring, summer, fall, Thanksgiving and winter table scape.

I think a rug would be my first thought. You have some great colors to work with. Can you post a pic showing the chair fabric in more detail?

I like the console, lamps and starburst mirror as is - the Starburst is high enough people aren't apt to be annoyed seeing themselves eating. I would be uncomfortable if a regular mirror were substuted. The candles on that unit could be replaced with a colorful ceramic bowl.

I'd seriously consider an area rug under that table. Something complementary to other nearby colors and styles, with a flash to it. A larger and more vibrant picture on the right wall. The candle sconces would either be moved according, or removed depending on the nature of the art you select.

I don't see any problem with the height of the art and scones on that wall, but then again I am quite tall and hate looking down on art when I am standing. I guess I figure art should elevate one, literally and metaphorically. YMMV.

The first thing that jumps out at me is that 'gee, this room must be too dark cause look at all those lamps and candles!'

I agree with most - get rid of all the candles, including the sconces, add a chandelier, and get bigger artwork. I like your wainscoting and floor. A rug with attractive colors would be great. Make sure it's big enough so that when the chairs are pulled out they are still on the rug.

Maybe it's just the angle of this picture, but it appears all the furniture is squinched into the corner. Do you have room to pull it out a bit?

I wonder if the reason there's no chandelier is the fact that the ceiling isn't wired for one.

I'm back defending my mirror idea. I am so surprised at the number of people who watch themselves eat in the mirror. I approach a mirror application to add sparkle and dimension. I have never been to another persons house and watched myself eat in their mirror or they mine. I guess I am too much into the food and table setting. It's amusing. So next question....what do you do with mirrored furniture?

I have a large mirror hung horizontally on an awkward wall in my dining space. When I posed the "should I / shouldn't I" question here, there were quite a few who said that a large mirror in a dining space makes them uncomfortable. I went ahead and did it anyway, and I think it adds a nice touch to my space. I don't watch myself eat either. It's just sparkle and depth and truth be told, a good place to make a last minute check of the hair before dashing out the garage door on the other side of the kitchen.

There have been so many wonderful and practical ideas given by a good number of people, and I'm a little surprised that Carrier Greer has given no response at all. I would have been thrilled by all that input and at least thanked everyone, although in my case I'd be busy looking at rugs and paintings and asking advice umpteen times. I hope we'll hear back.

I love the lamps, mirror, and furniture. They go together well. However, I don't feel that the art and scones look right, plus they're hung too high. I would look for a larger piece of art, hung a little lower. Also, the candlesticks on the buffet are too high, so I would remove those and put something low there. Lastly, I would get a table runner....maybe a sheer goldish color with a bit of shimmer.

Looking forward to hearing from you Carrier Greer and what you did with your room. We're on pins and needles about the mirror thing. Ha.
