Hmm, Temecula. Do you know about Frankincense (Boswellia sacra), extremely drought tolerant, and the sap smells like fragrant incense. Pomegranate and figs would also do well, or fruiting quince (not talking about flowering quince), it is more drought tolerant than apple and likes things warm and dry.

Spanish Cork Oak, a drought tolerant oak with unusually thick and squishy bark.

Welwitschia is an unusually shaped ancient desert plant.

The Persian Yellow rose does very well in dry conditions.
