Tried everything I know

DH was using the leaf blower last week and had gas leak all over his clothes. He put them in a bucket and 2 days later washed them with a little Dawn and hung them on the line. I used a Tide pod and Borax, hot water soaked for about a day, no change. Then I used a cup of baking soda, Tide pod, hot water soak for a day, added three cups of white vinegar soaked another day, no change.

Lastly, I used STPP and Tide powder a long soak, line dry and the waist band of the jeans is a lot better but can still smell gas. Is there anything else? Ammonia is out as I cannot breathe around it.

beagle, I think I'd use a liquid (Tide or Wisk?) rather than a pod or powder, but mamap will surely be here soon to suggest something. Luck to you, missy.

If it was me I'd throw them out. No way I'm going thru the effort to remove a flamable like this. And if its not all removed, if traces remain and your nose doesn't detect it and its put in the dryer..well you know what I'm saying. I'd toss them Bea..were they work clothes?

Mamap, it's got to be a challenge. The shirt and Tshirt I think are ok. The jeans are Levi's, a Christmas present. The Jeans don't go in the dryer but the shirts would. He's being such a butt about it. Sorry I'm in a fowl mood today.LOL Well the jeans do go in the dryer on air dry, just to fluff them up then hang dry.

Bea. Try a half liquid and half powder soak (not in the washer) with stpp...change water every few hours. Continue doing this until all scent is gone...this is where unscented detergent would come in handy so you know the scented stuff isn't covering the scent up....

Bea I'm sure you know how to deal with a hubs in that mood....LOL..

Not my bailiwick but I'd try boiling with a pretreat.

Given the dangers of gas fumes, I like Lisa's airing out suggestion best, by far. After a thorough airing there ought to be nothing to worry about explosion-wise.

Is it straight gasoline or gas/oil mix? Gasoline will evaporate if you hang it out, but you might be left with the additives. If they don't come out with detergent, try goop.

Saw my Mom do this hundreds of times. She put newspaper down and put the clothes on them flat. She mixed powdered Oxydol and Liquid Wisk together and a little water to get it spreadable. The applied detergent with a paint brush on one side then fold in half, then that part till covered. Then roll up from one end, set aside and go to next piece until all clothes are coated. Then let them sit for 30 min to an hour. Put in washer and wash on hot. For the most part all of them were clean. Also added washing soda to the washer sometimes. I have seen his clothes drenched with hydraulic fluid, diesel fuel, oil. Some looked ready to drip. You could try Tide with bleach now instead of Oxydol. Maybe add some Biz even in the mixture. At least you just have a few things to clean up. She dealt with pants and shirts in summer then in winter add coveralls and jackets. She painted them all and got them clean. Hope this helps you.

Thanks to all. I'm thinking there must be some additive mixed with the gas. with all the soaking and washing I've done, I would think the gas would have been taken care of. These is still a faint odor in the tshirt. As much as I hate to, Just might take Mama's first advice and trash them.

Don't throw them out yet! I must've washed/soaked 8 to 10 times before I put my coat out on the deck. The airing out (for a long time) made all the difference.
