if you want a clean look, then prob go w/the bigger picture.

It could be larger (and higher as you have noted) but you could also add some accessories on the sides of the art as Beth H suggested.

This is probably a personal preference (not a pro), but I would opt for the larger size because you have open shelving on either side so I would minimize the visual "noise," if that makes any sense. It's a gorgeous fireplace!

the darker built ins with the dark painting, it would balance better if it were larger.

Add something dramatic like this on both side of painting. Have branches a more bare than full tohighlight the painting.

I agree that it needs to be larger, however, before ordering it put some blue tape up for the size to help determine if you will be happier.

You can go as large as the firebox opening below but no wider than that. With the formal FP I think a framed piece will be better, as will less countrified bookcases flanking it.

It's way too small. It needs to fill the frame, more. There is too much space on all four sides. Something wider more square would work better.

The painting looks nice if you hang it a bit higher and add a tall pair of "something" to the left and right on the shelf. Please do not place too many things on the shelf though, this is a big mistake too many people make. It will take away from the artwork. You could also hang a pair of sconces that could flank the painting.

So... I took it down today and when I set it on the mantel and walked away, it kind of speaks to me off center and leaned against wall. I threw some ceramic houses I have up there (but hate them). So I'm thinking if I can find a big vase or something for the left.... it may work... ?
