When it is likely to create too much damage from repotting try the pot in a pot method. Simply put the overgrown pot in a bigger pot with an inch or more to fill in with medium all the way around. I've on occasion have modified this method by breaking or cutting the pot and removing whatever was easy.

I have more success with the pot in pot method. The roots are not disturbed that way.

As for your question, you should go on a plant by plant basis. Some maybe good with the pot in a pot, but sometimes it might be better to divide and repot.

Put up some pictures and we can give you some ideas.

I agree with all the comments above. The how and when to repot is informed by the type of orchid. As a general rule of thumb, try to repot when you see active root growth.

Sorry, it took me a while to get back here. I was pretty sick and then the only good days I had were too stinking cold to even walk into the greenhouse and take pics..I promise I will work on that this weekend. I could really use your help..

I suppose they might be ok in the pot in pot method but what concerns me is the center of some of them rotting out while the edge roots exposed to air do better. I will take pic to get input...Thanks again!

If the centers of the plants are in good condition now, the pot-in-pot shouldn't cause any additional issues. If you are concerned, remove as much of the original pot as possible before dropping it into a slightly larger pot. I only use a small amount of additional media to stabilize the plant, if needed.

As a side note: I always try to remove orchids from their original plastic pots before I use this method as I don't like the idea of the plastic always being there as an inner 'constraint'. I'll break clay pots with a hammer and remove the easy pieces, wood baskets usually go in 'as is'.
