mother of pearl tile would look great with under cabinet lighting. the tile comes in a range of sizes and styles

I think there might be too much going on with the black granite / bluish marble / ivory cabinets. Look at a simple non-gloss tile that matches the cabinet color.

Thank all of you very much for your suggestions. I think the mother of pearl is very pretty, but I hate to bring in another stone material to the mix. I am definitely having the marble honed, so what do you think about the marble subway tiles in a honed? Do the cream cabinets look okay with the marble against them or is it hard to tell.

The cream against the white marble is a bit of a clash. You can clearly see the tonal difference in the island. I would suggest repainting the cabinets to white if you're planning on doing a white marble backsplash. That was the reason I initially suggested mother of pearl due to it's muted off white color would coordinate with your existing cabinet color but if you're open to painting the cabinets then go for it. You could also consider painting the island a dark color while the rest of the kitchen is white as in the image below.

Movadesign, thank you for explaining about the mother of pearl. I might just reconsider using that. I don't know if I want to bring up having the island painted, so I will have to really think about that. Were you going to post a picture with a dark painted island. You mentioned about a picture, but I didn't see one. Thank you taking the time to help me.

I love the dark island. Just showed my husband the picture and he made no comment. I'll have to keep bringing it up

Honing your new marble will make it more porous and even more open to staining than the polished finish. I would reconsider that notion or at least do a lot more research and know what you are getting into maintenance wise.
