If you get rain but not enough to reach the roots, the tree will produce surface roots to absorb the moisture on the ground. The edible fig is related to the figs that normally produce aerial roots, such as the common ficus benjamina houseplant, though edibles rarely do that. I have several India Banyan bonsai like this one in my office with lots of aerial roots.

Figs tend to like more clay-like limestone soil. That soil doesn't seem very substantive. It's too loamy and too many woodchips. The roots are just going to go right through it looking for hard soil. Think about the type of climates were figs typically grow in and what the soil is like.

I just added these wood chips yesterday. Our soil actually has a lot of clay for better or worse. Whenever I did down 1-2 feet it's there.

That's interesting about the aerial roots. So is this normal behavior then for a fig?
