Front Yard Landscaping

We are ready to put in some landscaping in our front yard. We have a limited budget due to major repair expenses this past year. I would like to put a path from sidewalk to front area along with planters along front and left side where we connect with our neighbors. I would also like to add a few trees. We are in Orange County, planting zone 10. While we would like to reduce the amount of grass, we would like to keep some. Also, I was thinking about drought tolerant ground cover for area where tree is located. I would love any planter, plant and or tree ideas! I like a cottage or beach look. Not necessary to comment on painting the house, redoing the balcony, replacing garage door, etc. After 2 years, we have affectionately renamed our home 'the money pit'!

What a great house. I don't think you need to paint the exterior as it looks pretty good. I also don't think you need to spend the cash making a walkway since you have a cute sideway in front of the house. I think I'd make a big "oval" in the center of the lawn (with grass) and have the exterior corners bark and low planting. Plus, plantings close to the house for depth. It won't take much to give you some lovely curb appeal in a DIY situation. You can get bender board to outline the grass and add planting/mulch surrounding the lawn.

I would remove all the grass, and plant a variety of drought tolerant shrubs, small trees, and flowers, with a drip system surrounded by mulch. Plants grow so quickly here it will fill in nicely right away. You could use large concrete rectangles for the walkway, separated by ground covers like thyme.

There are a number of groundcovers you can use in socal. Here are two from projects we did. Drought tolerant landscaping is between $6-$8 a sq ft while grass is about $4 so just fyi for budgeting.
