The mammoth size of it is what I don't like ... its overpowering. Would your husband be adverse to removing some of it?

He already objected to that, Bailey. You can paint, whitewash or stain it. I don't care for the foundation that is underneath the hearth - looks like too much mortar and not enough stone. Wonder it you could face that with something that works like benderboard that would curve to the shape. Might have to chisel off some of the stone to do it. The inserted item could be matched up to a new mantel perhaps with stain or paint.

It seems that it needs a much longer mantel? Then add a couple of large objects on the hearth.

Who says this is dated? I'll tell you one thing, this looks a hell of a lot better then many of these modern fireplaces. Why? Cause its real, thats why. Your husband is smart, leave it alone. You live there and have gotten used to it and now think its dated. But in reality it nice and real. Natural elements in the house is extremely elegant. Not like most of this modern garbage with fake tiles and paint slapped all over everything. Ask people you know very well that haven't been over your house that much. I bet they will agree its nice.

My uncle has a very similar fireplace just a little bit smaller and the fireplace opening is larger. But hes a bit of a nature guy. He has a couple of really nice taxidermy birds on each side. It looks good. Maybe thats all you need. Just hang something on each side so it wont feel so overwhelming.

If you wanna refresh it. Try to find tiles or granite that goes well with the stone and just change the base.

Stone fireplaces are one of my favorite, a close second is wood which is what i have. Brick fireplaces I have never liked.
