I would do a larger island painted black replace hardware with all chrome handles no knobs to add a touch of modern to the space...off white subway tile backsplash....simple and classic.

Since you have a lot of brown going on already, I also suggest an island painted black or a dark charcoal gray. White or off white subway backsplash will look great too, like what was mentioned above me.

I'm just having so much trouble liking the warm wood tones of the cabs with the cool tones of the counters and floors.

If it were my kitchen I would switch out the floors to a dark tone to anchor the space.

My computer shows the counters as "warm". I used cream subway with my wood cabinets and I am very happy with how the backsplash came out. With the countertop having lots going on and the pretty wood, I would not want to distract with a busy backsplash.

What color are the cabinets in this photo?

I'm having a little problem getting a read on your floor color (in a couple of pix on my screen it seems pinkish) but if it is warm like your countertop seems to be would you condiser a sage green. You have so much brown in the room and a pretty soft color might look nice.

If there were ever walls that needed a touch of subtle color it is your kitchen walls. As an FYI even white has color undertones. No amount of bling is going to fix this kitchen if the wall and ceiling color are fighting the floor, counter and cabinets - which is what you have now.

it's kinda creamy white? It seems really light yellow at times. I live in Tucson, so always sunny. That changes things too. I am going to paint ceiling and walls once kitchen is done. Right now planning island, and wether to refinish the cabinets.

I think you just have a little bit of a dated situation going on here, and that knotty pine door is not working. It's ultimately up to you on how much money you want to spend. Those cabinets needs to be painted. I would upgrade your island, and I would paint it a different color than the cabinets. And then if you're going to leave the granite, then I would just decorate around it. I would upgrade the cabinet hardware and do something else with that pantry door.

I think your wood is very pretty:) I have a soft creamy beige on the walls of my wood kitchen and throughout my mail rooms. I also think also think sage greens work well with wood. This kitchen does not have the same wood as yours, but it is mid tone warm wood. I would probably lighten this green up a bit if this were my kitchen:

Some ideas. If you go larger with the island rather than trying to match the granite you could use butcher block.

Look at polished nickel or chrome pulls. I'd loose the knobs on the drawers in favor of pulls to update the cabinets. Hopefully the distance on the holes works. I'm still having a problem with the floor and the counter color. Do you have hardwood elsewhere in the house? If you do, I might consider extending it into the kitchen and loosing the tile floor. I know Tuscan can be sanding and dusty - I lived there for a month at Midas training/building. I would do stark white anything in that kitchen as the base colors are warm. Embrace what you have and since you are in the Southwest honor the earthen tones that are inherent to that region. Nice kitchen!
