Which looks better.

Ok, I do to, however the cabinet opens from the left, therefore will be a "fake" handle for looks. I can live with it.

If the door is hinged on the right and has its handle on the left there is no way anyone can put anything into or take anything out of the cabinet from the kitchen side. And vise versa from outside the island. If the door is already hinged, which it looks like it already is if its not a false front door, your kind of stuck

My opinion. Hinge the door on the left put the handle on the right.

Actually what i have in the cabinet is stuff I will hardly use. Yes it is hinged on the left, so was thinking of putting handle on right (fake handle) and opening it from the left without a handle there. It's not great but I want it to be visually pleasing, and I'll sacrifice functionality. My designer is a dope.

As an option of the door is hinged on the right at the moment and NO HOLES ARE DRILLED IN THE DOOR, you can flip the door and have it hinge on the left and put the handle on the right. I agree with what everyone else says about access issues but feel that items placed in the far left cabinet are not going to be items you use on a daily basis. In this situation visual appeal is more important than function I vote right!
P.S. Love the cat in the window! He/she looks very happy!

Can you recommend a backsplash too?

I agree with Amy. Change the hinges so that the door works properly.

    Right will be perfect!

    Looks better on the right.

You could use one of those magnetic push-to-open fasteners that doesn't show from the outside. It is handy to have a cabinet open from the island side.

I have done the same countertop color with a glass tile from Artistic tile. It comes in all types of shapes and sizes. http://www.artistictile.com/productdetails.aspx?Mname=Wolfgang%20White&Cid=27

I attached a photo of the splash from the job. It came out wonderful and just really set the kitchen off. I get comments from clients all the time who just LOVE it.

What about no handle? The door can still be opened from the bottom or the side that is not hinged, especially if you are not using it often.

Just make sure you put one of those clear silicone bumpers on the wall, or the handle or door will likely leave a mark on the drywall when it is opened.

form with out function doesn't work, hinge it the way you access it. Also 170 degree hinges are available so the door can swing all the way open and then it can be accessed from either side, you just have to get out of the way of the swing.

    right for sure !

Oh I forget to mention that I originally had the handle on the left and did not like it at all so I filled in the holes myself ( I know), no one will notice if I don't point it out. I think I will go with the "fake" on the right and just open the door by hand from the left
  • 13 years ago
I agree with no handle on that cabinet.
    right for sure.
I think it depends on how the cabinet opens, but i like end cabinets to open where they are most functional. In this pictured cabinet i woul have the hinges on the left, handle on the right.
Forget the handle. Remove the door entirely and have open shelves with a bright back--cream beadboard, perhaps--and lighting from above for each shelf (or glass shelves with lighting at top only). Use the shelves for a combination of display and storage of entertaining items like cocktail napkins, small plates and wine glass charms.

I also agree with no handle. If it is a cupboard that you do not frequent then I would opt not to put a handle on it. I really do not feel that it looks great on either side but the right is visually more pleasing than the left if your heart is set on putting a handle on it :)

Right... I think no handle at all would look odd.
IF the Hinge is on the right and you will hardly use it..... NO handle is needed at all..... Especially if you are considering putting it on the right and it's a fake handle because of hinge placement..... You could also put it horizontally across the bottom, since it's an odd cabinet in an odd space.... Your cabinet/kitchen designer made a huge mistake here.... That cabinet should have been accessible from the inside of the double next to it and the door should not have been hinged or able to open at all...... Treat it like a decorative panel.....

I like the idea of open glass shelving there but if you put the handle on I would have it agree with the way it opens (put it on the left.) I wonder if you put it on the hinged side if when you open it all the way it might damage the cabinet next to it.

if you'd have put the handles horizontally it wouldn't have mattered !

Hinges on the left and handle on the right. It is more aesthetically pleasing and functional. A Glass backsplash is very easy to clean.

It looks better on the right BUT the best function is a right hinged door with a left handle placement. Otherwise you have to reach around the door to get anything.
Laurie, could you post a photo with the door in question opened ?

Things to consider: "fake" pulls are confusing to guests, and they will be pulled a lot, possibly loosening the hinges over time, hence, the reason we no longer install pulls/knobs on fixed panels under sinks. Doors without pulls/knobs (touch-latch) will get fingerprints, and need regular cleaning. It's just fine to put the hardware pull where it needs to be for functional operation.

I have a cabinet positioned like that but it opens on the right. I cannot reach anything above the first shelf in that cabinet. It has a glass front, so I just put some decorative items in it, but it is a waste of cabinet space. I would opt for functionality.
It really depends on which way the cabinet opens. Practicality says you can't have a handle on the same side as the hinges.
The right for sure! As for the backsplash, nothing too busy to compete with your countertop . A white subway tile would look nice.
It seems that the LEFT would be the best option for the cabinets location.
    No door. Open shelving.

This was poor planning, unless the cabinet was meant to only house items for the dining side of the counter, in that case it would make sense for the handle to be on the left.

Hi, the door of the cabinet is reversible. It has no top/bottom and has Euro style hinges on a plywood or MDF box. Have the installer come back and flip it, otherwise you need to kneel on the counter to look inside! Oh, if the hinges open to 170 degrees they can be changed out for hinges that stop at 90 degrees.
Why don't you pull the cabinet down and hang a nice picture on the wall
  • 13 years ago
I think get rid of the door put a wine rack insert or open shelves instead.

You are right Laurie, the handle definitely looks better on the right. You should flip the door and install 170 degree hinges on the left side of the cabinet. These hinges will allow better access to the cabinet. If it is a stock cabinet door, I would order another to eliminate the filled handle holes. :) Good Luck!

    Right.

Here it is with the door open

I think you should lose that door and put in the light colored subway tile for a backsplash and bring it up to the wall at the back of the doorless cabinet. It would be really sharp. I realize lighting the cabinet would be an extra step, but if you have it added to your under-cabinet lighting (so that it operates on the same switch) it would be an easy job for an electrician and it would finish that corner, making it a feature instead of an afterthought/handle placement problem.
I would put all three handles horizontally across the center bottom of each door. I know it is a lot of holes to fill. I still think it will be worth it
  • 13 years ago
I would take the door completely off and use it as an open shelf to display pretty yet usable pottery etc.

Hi Laurie, thanks for the photo. You mentioned in your second post "Yes it is hinged on the LEFT, so was thinking of putting handle on right (fake handle) and opening it from the left without a handle there." -- so I was very confused. It is actually hinged on the right, and opens on the left.

I would use a knob for each door, no pulls.
