If you are trying to get an exact match, such as for existing paint, go to the SW store. Otherwise, your paint store will likely already have a color match formula for that color since it is a popular choice now.

Is your eye actually good enough to detect a less than perfect matched color sample when the space has been painted? Most of us don't have that talent.

In times past when I was trying to choose one from a selection of similar colors, I cut up the color chips and put them on the table and slid them around like scrabble tiles. If I couldn't pull the same chip out from the collection, then the exact color choice wasn't that important.

You've already gotten 'similar colors' during previous attempts to match, but they didn't 'match correctly'. Which is it? You either want an exact match or you don't.

Which also begs the question...Why don't you just buy the real Sea Salt from the paint company that makes it?

I was just at the BM store and the color card that it's really close to the SW Sea Salt is the BM AF-485 Cystalline. Gray cashmere 2138-60 has more gray but is also a close color. AF-485 although not identical, is the same color shade but slightly (very tiny I mean) darker than Sea Salt. Still a closer match than the Gray Cashmere

I have the color card for the Arctic Gray is more gray and not as close to being a match like Gray Cashmere or Crystalline. I checked all those in the light. I'm actually painting an entire living room in Gray Cashmere, I like that color a lot because the room has a lot of light and the Sea Salt looks too green.

IMHO, the answer is no. I specified SW Sea Salt for three rooms in my house when building. The painter had said he was willing to use either BM or SW. Well, he took the easy way out, and had the paint store do the BM color match. It took me about 10 seconds to realize what he'd done. I painted (another) swatch of the SW version on the same wall, and the difference was obvious. He had to redo it all, at his expense. That said, be careful with this color. It looks totally blue in one room and quite green in the others. It's what I wanted, this color very sensitive to the light in each room.

I'm going to try Behr paint formula match. Behr has the SW formula in their computer, is not the color match technique. I've used before with another SW color and it was a perfect match. I'll let you know how it turns out. I'm painting a small guest room so I'm not picky if it the color is off, but want to test it anyway. SW paint is on sale now but I hate that they don't have eggshell. Their satin is too shiny for my walls. They call it eggshell/satin but it's just satin.

I just bought BM paint and they were able to look up the formula for the SW6204 Sea Salt. I'm very happy with the color, looks the same to me. Is not color match, is formula match.

Formula match is not COLOR match. Depends how picky you are. I'm picky

I painted the wall next to SW sample and looks the same cannot tell where one ends and the other begins, so for this one I'm happy how it turned out. I refuse to use SW paint, their eggshell/satin is too shiny.

When we bought our home, an addition was painted in SW Sea Salt by the seller, using Benjamin Moore Regal Select paint As they left the extra paint for us. I’ve held the SW color card up and it looks identical. We love it! Gorgeous color, it will remain up long after we’ve painted over the Revere Pewter living room and Stonington Gray kitchen. as an aside, I had to touch up some spots due to adding new in wall speakers, at least 5 year old paint in the can, and it’s flawless. Probably more a testament to the quality of the paint than the color match.

@Jeremy M. Crane, do you have the formula for Benjamin Moore Sea Salt? Do you have the picture of the wall that you already painted?

I just posted a bunch of photos of my painted cottage and I don’t see it uploaded. Maybe it has to go through approval. I used Benjamin Moore paint using the SW6204 color formula. I’m very happy with this color. This photo shows BM paint using SW formula and the right is the SW color card. It’s an exact match.

@fsg89 I just noticed I’m registered under 2 emails so the photos posted under Gaby are mine. I’m very happy with the BM paint using the SW6204 formula. People compliment my wall color all the time. You have to make sure you don’t buy the paint using the Benjamin Moore Sea Salt color CSP-95 because is more khaki, it has to be the SW6204 formula. I’ll upload both color cards so you know the difference.

@gaby, which does the color show more blue or green to you?

@fsg89 it looks more green. If you look at this photo, the wall looks more green. You can compare it because I have that green ceiling fan and blue pillows and curtain. are you looking for more blue? If you’re, I think Palladian Blue looks more blue.

Gaby has a different base and her formula is slightly different. She used Ben eggshell, the seller of our home used Regal Matte. it definitely looks more green, really a nice color. I'm not sure what paint line you were planning to use, but if you have kids, I'd consider using the new Scuff-X paint Benjamin Moore came out with. It is a commercial paint, but it is being used by many in residential settings. Price point is similar to Regal. Note that the formula faded a bit, Blue is 4.25, not .25. It's night time here so I can't really get a good photo but we love the color. It is a favorite for designers for a reason! You really shouldn't need our formulas, your local BM store should have no problem color matching this particular color perfectly.

This is for testing. This is sea salt color by Sherwin-Williams. But I prefer to use BM for bathroom.

If the only reason your not using SW is because you want eggshell then use their Cashmere paint. It comes in low luster as well as eggshell!

Understand that SW and BM have different base paints into which they add colorant. So there will be slight differences no matter how much you try to “match” formulas. The SW Cashmere is very nice and you will have exact color. The two brands Sea Salt are only the same in name. Totally different colors.

@lynartist I don’t like any SW paint. Too expensive for what you get. I never had an issue with Behr, Valspar , or Benjamin Moore being my favorite.

SW seems to always be having a sale and BM is not less expensive! I have never had any luck getting a decent match with Behr for a BM or SW color. It may be “ close” but these companies have different bases and their own colorant systems so if close is good enough...,

I prefer to use BM. I hope that BM able to get that formula for this color.

If you absolutely must have BM then just do as Jan Moyer says and have them color match it. I’m sure it will be fine. There’s an old saying... Nobody will notice when they see it from across the street;)!

Depends on the color, so you need to check it matches the color card. I had Good luck with getting Behr to match BM wyeth blue but they were not able to match BM Wolf Gray. BM was great at matching SWsea salt. I bought my BM paints at 40% off so I paid $27, but even if SW was cheaper I just don’t like their paints. The last 2 rooms I painted with SW I told myself never to use that paint again.

Best I've seen is 15-20%, often with restrictions or caveats or the $10 off Regal gallons they had last spring. Of course, I always seem to need paint when it isn't on sale, but oh well. I've never seen 40% off Benjamin Moore, but maybe it's store specific.

As for color match, I would say it is shop and person specific. We had an ancient, dried up can of paint that we determined to be a brand that is part of California (Muralo, from about 30 years ago). We went to the store that sells California to see if they could match it. They informed us that it would take them several hours and so on and so forth about matching by eye. We took our can around the corner to the paint store we normally use but carries BM and not California, and the guy there had the computer pick out something close and adjusted the color until it blended in (the painter had been sloppy, so there was plenty of test areas on the can to match). We happily took our new paint home after about 20 minutes. The paint matched beautifully; we've painted partial walls, and you can't tell where the new paint starts or which walls have been painted. He seems to be particularly good at it ... he's matched a few different colors for us wonderfully.

Find a good person, and color matching is the way to go. If you've had bad experiences with it before, it might have been the person not the company.

I haven't tried any formula matching, but I will say formulas are not always the same for the same color, even for the same company. I had a can from SW (Raisin) be mixed and read out as one formula on the receipt, but when they were helping me compare to another color (Black Bean), they printed the formulas for the pair in their sample paint, and the Raisin formula was not the same as the one on my receipt. So just changing lines within a company can change the formula ... I'm sure different companies are adjusting for their own differences when they formula match, but I think I'd still go with a visual match.

@fsg89 my local store had 40% off during Thanksgiving. You need to check with your local store. Mine usually has sales during holidays (Memorial, 4th of July, Labor Day)

Totally agree that you need to find a store and person that is good at color matching. I've had varied experiences with it until I found one BM store that excelled in matching colors. Also, I have BM color matched SW Sea Salt and it looks perfect. I've found that it varies between blue and green depending on lighting.

I love Sea Salt from Sherman Williams. They have the best paint. It's true coverage. If you sign up for coupons and combine with paint sales you can't beat the price. I've used Bher it's the worst one!! Horrible coverage. Took 6 gallons of Home Depot crappy paint to cover a small kitchen... Valspar is ok. Just not a fan of their color way. SW on sale with a customer coupons. The last one I had was 30% off along with a paint sale that was %30 off. It was a sweet deal. It's less than HD or Lowes and remember labor to paint.. Miller and Parker have some nice paint too, just love the SW colors. Sea Salt has been such a popular paint color for over a decade because it's 3 colors in one. Low light S.S. looks light gray. Bright light it's a very soft green. Mud day light it's a soft blueish, greenish gray.
