I love Serviceberry trees and Washington Hawthorns, and both are relatively small ornamental trees. My Robin Hill Serviceberry trees are the most upright in habit of the Serviceberry types I have.

You're looking for a deciduous tree and not a conifer, correct? Are there any preferences like flowering (if so, what colors appeal to you?), fruiting, shade?

Do spend some time with the link Embothrium posted. Those are probably your best choices for this area. Serviceberry and Hawthorn would be good, although It'll take some hunting to find a Serviceberry with the right shape and Washington Hawthorns have wicked thorns.

An out of the the box choice would be Acer pseudosieboldianum Arctic Jade, a Korean maple that looks a lot like a Japanese maple but has better cold and wind tolerance. I think it'd be happier with morning sun and afternoon shade though, not your situation. I picked one up for half off at Paulino's in fall of 2015 and love it. A Crimson Cloud Hawthorn would be a unique choice, too. They had a nice one at the Westminster O'Toole's last fall and I'm still kicking myself for not buying it.

Yes, I am looking for deciduous. I should have included that information. I like flowering but do not care for any fruit. (I have a peach tree already.) I do not want any thorns, no. Shade is good but the main function is just to provide some privacy/screen between me and my neighbor.

I remember you mentioned that Arctic Jade to me before. It sounds lovely. I'm not sure it would thrive in this particular area due to the sun exposure.

I reviewed the list from CSU extension and didn't see anything other than the Quaking Aspen that fit the shape I have in my brain. That tree seems to come with its own problems.

I have had two Hawthorns and both never seemed to grow more then 2" or so per year. Way to slow for me.

I have a European Mountain Ash that grows more upright. It has pretty reddish bark. It flowers in the spring, and the small berries turn red as they mature. The leaves turn red in the fall. This was to be our specimen tree in our front yard and I wanted it all. One thing that you may especially like, is that the leaves from last year are still on the tree! I planted this tree since I needed something small and narrow.
