Plum trees full of black knot

Hi all, I've just recently moved back into my home after 3 years of my ex living in it. Unfortunately the landscape was not cared for at all. I have two plum trees I planted maybe 8-10 years ago. I've come back to see them completely covered with black knot. I mean it's on pretty much every single branch. I'd have to cut it back to a 4-5 foot bare trunk to get it all off. It covers the entire tree other than the trunk.

So this is probably a dumb question, but can the trees be saved? I figure I need to just remove them, but wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions that could save them.

Thanks!
