You should consider adding an area rug to soften the space and art above the sofa. The rug should ground the seating area as shown below. Good luck!

I like the colors in your throw pillows. You might want to bring that color into art above the sofa and or an area rug, maybe the drapes.

It is a little crowded with the furniture in the far corner and the desk and the chair up front is disjointed, probably intentionally for the photo. Is there room at this end of the room to move things over enough to not have it quite so crowded?

The end table does look a little boxy in lines next to that couch, and the lamp looks too formal in that setting. I would go cleaner lines. The furniture looks built for comfort, rather than design, which makes people who sit there happy, but which makes "designing" the room turn into a more challenging process. It is okay. Aim for comfort, rather than design, is what I am going to say, but bring in more of the colors.

None of those items really work together do they in terms of color or size? You can't just throw something 'close' in appearance into the room. That's why you can't get the room finished.

I would move the chair on the right and make it facing the other chair in the back. Also, if a blanket or pillow are needed, we might have something to add to the room.

I think you would be happier if your two chairs were smaller scaled.

what is the purpose of this room, because it seems like it is trying to do too much.


you have a seating conversation area like a living room,

then you have a dresser of some sort pushed against the wall like a bedroom

then the little table with chair like an office in the right pushed against the wall...

i think thats why it doesnt seem right to you.

This room is off the kitchen and I look at it most of the day. It causes me grief. it has a wood burning stove in corner. We use it for t.v. And lolling about. It is 22 ft long and 12 wide the photo is of opposite end of room

i think it would help if you moved the dresser and table and got a bright rug.

the room seems a little dark and heavy because of the big sofas and their dark color. if they were lighter they might look better.

what you can do is buy a rug with bright neutral Or colorful colors. it would draw your eye to the middle and outsides of the room

then if you can, remove the dresser and table to other rooms where they would look better and be more useful

you said you use the room for tv and general moving about so the dresser and table arent really necessary then dont you think.

I agree that an area rug and a taller lamp would make a difference. Also a larger piece of art over the couch would look nice

i just noticed your rug now. sorry. in that case it will do but if it had some colors from your pillows it would bring life into the room

the room looks very muted. there seems tobe no life and every furniture is dark. if there were more light colored rugs, pilows ans throws it might help. but i think the main eye sore is that the room is too crowded. getting rid of one of the chairs and the dresser and table will do wonders. try it. and see if it feels better

you need room to move around and 12 ft wide isnt that wide to have 2 chairs
my rrooms are also about 12 ft wide

Thank you for all your helpful tips . Will purchase a more cheerful rug. Desk will have to stay as my grandchild does her homework there and the dresser is a drinks cabinet inherited from home. Pensioner on a budget. Appreciate all the ideas

Have you tried your sofa tucked under the window? Looks like maybe a radiator is there, but you wouldn't have to place it right up against it. I'd float the beige rug with just the front end of the sofa on it. I might try the cabinet where the desk is and place the desk on the wall where the end table is. I'd leave the wing chair but angle it into the room, and place the other chair, angled towards the rug, to the left of the sofa. The ottoman would work, and also the smaller end table next to the wing chair. You could use a smaller lamp atop the cabinet and also another source of light on the desk. I think "playing" with your furniture placement might lift your spirits! Good luck!

The last arrangement doesn't work because the chair with ottoman is too far from the other seating.

You say you watch TV in this space. Where is the TV?

I liked the teal rug with your other furnishings. I'd put it back, move the wing chair to here, paint the yellow table white, and frame all those little photos in separate wall frames and hang them as a gallery wall.

Margaret, it does look cozier! Is that rug a rectangle? If so, I'd try it the other direction. And, I'd move the chair to be closer to the sofa, angled towards the wing chair. You'll have to toy with your pictures as well, if you get the room the way you like it. Great start!

Looks like you have room for the larger end table with that larger lamp. Try it and see!

Just wanted to say, your house is lovely!

Margaret, if you like it then it's "right"; I always tell people that I help arrange furniture that it's their house and they can do as they please! Having said that, here's a few more ideas to try. I think you're almost there! Try pulling the rug out so the sofa feet don't touch it; I think bc of its size it would anchor the space better. Try switching the chairs; the wing might compliment the space better (and you could snug whichever one ends up by the slider a bit more into the space). The end table/lamp looks best where you have it; if the larger end table fits there I think it would give the lamp more balance. You'll have to edit and rethink the pictures once you have your furniture placed. I'd take them all down and think it through before hanging any back up. The cabinet is a wonderful piece and its new placement looks great! Lastly, I'd suggest editing the items on the couch. The green pillows seem too strong, so I'd try taking those out. The orange throw (I think you have two; I'd use the smaller one) could be placed over the right arm of the sofa with one of the printed pillows. I'd put the other printed pillow on whichever chair you end up with near the sofa, and arrange the blue ones between sofa and window chair. You can use the ottoman as coffee table with tray when you need to as you had in one of your pics. Have fun and enjoy your "new" room!
