Hello, I am new here. Love Houzz and I get a lot of my inspiration from here. But I have a huge dilemma and creatives - i need your help!

Recently we purchased a 1930s home in The Netherlands and I am slowly doing up room by room. My husband is not a handyman so he leaves it to me, everything. I do the painting and all.. But we hit a little wall. The hallway is dark, gloomy, old and needs some serious updating. The living room I have finished and that is a now Scandinavian with a bit of french country thrown in (photo shown). So to carry the theme I have choosen the colours for the hallway and they are:

THE WALLS - light grey/blue (colour swatch shown in photo)

ALL THE WOOD BOARDERS & METER CAST - the light cream and taupe colour (The stairs will be twotones with taupe covering most of the stairs, the backing will be the light cream)

FLOOR TILES will be painted to cut cost (with Annie Sloan and a hard lack over top) with a Cream backing with Grey Classic Stencil.

WINDOWS AROUND DOOR: Basic leadlight stencils

ACCESSORIES: Radiator and wall lights in copper, pussywillow in a big class blue vase. A wood wall coat rack from IKEA (painted my colours of the stairs) and a copper letter catcher (to catch letters) on the back of the door.

MY PROBLEM: shall I paint the door and the stair rail or leave it wood? My husband is very adamant he does not want it painted as it will take away value of the home as the door is old.. but he does not have any interior decorating experince (I do some what) and I don't think it will take away the price. Also the stairs have the wood rail too. Shall I paint that too or shall I leave them? In our lvling room we do have wood floors and some wood around the fireplace. But.. I feel the front door makes it feel dark.
