Free Standing Tubs—Weird?

We are currently designing a new master bath and have found ourselves visiting several showrooms and looking at countless photos online. Many, many of them feature freestanding bathtubs. Every time I look at one I think I'm attending a wake and that there should be someone in the tub surrounded by flowers and mourners. One showroom had one carved from a block of white marble—think ancient Egyptian sarcophagus...

Is it just me, or does anyone else share my reaction? My mate doesn't quite understand. Luckily for me our new bathroom has a large shower and no tub, so I don't have to deal with this issue too seriously, thus saving a lot of expensive therapy.

Lot more cleaning is what always come to my mind.

freestanding tubs are the original design... they were a large washtub set in the middle of the kitchen, in front of the stove.

then there were claw foot ones, with plumbing.

and then in the 40s (?) people got the idea to make them rectangular and attached to the wall.

and then they got GIANT and triangular and called 'garden tubs'.

and then they were oval and had jets to churn up the water. which got cold fast, so heaters were added.

and then when people got tired of that, they ditched the tub completely and went for just a big shower.

so now, we're back to freestanding, and at least they are still porcelain covered. wait a couple more years, we'll be back to wood washtubs, sitting in the kitchen in front of the induction cooktop.
