Replacing carpet with wood, when do I hire a contractor?

We are going to upgrade to wood flooring (engineered, bamboo or solid - decision not made yet). Do we hire a contractor before we select the flooring or after? Is there an advantage to when - contractor discount? Or do we find a decorator to help with decision making process and ask the decorator to find the contractor?

My first time doing a home upgrade beyond new appliances. Advice / suggestions?

I would start with the decorator and go from there. Also, do yourself a big favor and go with the solid hardwood.

If the only thing you are changing is the flooring you can start with a reputable flooring store. They usually have installers. There are also people / companies that specialize in hardwood flooring installation. If you don't know what kind of flooring would look best with your present home surfaces or vision for your home, consult with an interior designer.
