Storage: regular base cabinet vs. drawers

Are there items that are better to store in regular base cabinets rather than drawers? Are things like sheet pans and cutting boards better to store in a regular base cabinet with a rack? What other kitchen items are better stored in a regular base cabinet? I love drawers but wondered if I should incorporate a few regular base cabinets into my kitchen for certain items.

I'm in the planning stages of a kitchen remodel and I plan on storing my everyday dishes and bowls and every day pots and pans in drawers. The few regular base cabinets I have in the layout are for things that I don't use on a regular basis such as blenders, mixers, extra large pots. Baking sheets will be stored in a regular base cabinet with a rack.

No. Drawers are superior in just about every way possible. I put my platters and trays in the area above my double ovens and refrigerator. I used rails to align the trays. I just reach up and slide what I want out. This saves my drawer space for all of the other stuff.

Here is a link to my kitchen reveal. There are one or two pictures which show the empty drawers and wall cabinets in the same space. Drawers are just that efficient. I'm a convert thanks to the GW folks. Take a look.

I have almost all drawers, but did a couple shallow depth base cabinets on the back of my island with shelves only. I keep cookbooks, a breadbox, and a ton of small serving pieces in those (think: condiment bowls, ramekins, special soup bowls, smaller pyrex). I also like to keep my "big" items (food processor, heavy cast iron pieces, tall serving bottles/jars) in the shelves under my built in single oven). Trays and cookie sheets are above the fridge. I like those up there because I can reach and use them easily without a stool. If I put anything else up in that high cabinet, I'd need a stool, which would mean it'd become a holding place for useless kitchen items that I should just throw out.

I have mostly drawers in my kitchen. The exceptions are a 9" cabinet next to the sink that holds cookie sheets and cutting boards; the other exception is in my "wall of tall" - I have two file drawers, and below then I have a cabinet dedicated to beer and pop. I specified the shelf height to accommodate cans on top and bottles on the bottom. The cabinet is 20" deep. Drawers there would have reduced the storage space.

I have most of my vertical stuff up high. It's a great use of space because you only need to be able to reach the bottom corner.

And one litter cabinet just because it was an odd size that worked well for it:

Whatever you do, don't put cutting boards/cookie sheets in a regular base cabinet if you can avoid it. It's the only place I can put them in my current house and it's awful. Use that area for large, rarely used items.

    Drawers, drawers, drawers!

If you have lower cabinets, make sure to get them with rolling pull outs.

I wish I did all drawers with my kitchen.

I do have two regular base cabinets in my kitchen: the one under my sink and another one that has a drawer inside (for pot lids and pot holders) and dividers for trays/cookie sheets etc under it. There was not enough room for both as drawers, as I have another drawer above that holds all my spices.

I ADORE my big drawers! It's SO easy to find things - no more getting down on my hands and knees with a flashlight to find the angel food cake pan!

Thanks everyone. I'm vertically challenged(4ft 11in on a good day) so putting cutting boards, sheet pans ect. up above the fridge will not work for me. I can not reach that shelf without dragging out a step stool. In my old house we had all drawers and it worked well. We stored sheet pans in the prep sink regular cabinet and it was a pain. We didn't have any kind of rack so they were just piled in there and getting one out was not easy. We are building a log cabin and the kitchen is a nice size so there will be plenty of drawers. I want to try to keep most things we use everyday in the lower cabinets. I can reach the first shelf in uppers and only the things right on the edge of the 2nd shelf. The house was spec'd for mostly regular base cabinets and like 1 drawer bank so I know we will pay more for drawers and just thought if there were things that were better stored in regular base cabinets I could save some money and just have some regular cabinets that I could buy racks or inserts for. I do not like the pull out shelves. Would rather a drawer over that. We had pull outs in some cabinetry in our butlers pantry and I never used them. I would just grab what I need without pulling out the shelf.

We have a 39" x 21" (reduced depth) base cabinet with doors on it. We put 4 shelves in it so we can slide in oversized platters, baking dishes, lasagna pans etc. without stacking. We are glad we put it in.

"can reach the first shelf in uppers and only the things right on the edge of the 2nd shelf"

that's the same for me. I had someone put in 2 shallower shelves over the 1st shelf. so they set back a few inches... still deep enough for bowls. I didn't need 1 shelf with 12" of height. I only have a few plates for everyday use these days (there's just me). I had a few more small bowls tho for soup, chili, ice cream etc. so on bottom shelf I have my stack of paper plates, my few regular plates, some mugs and a few odd shaped bowls. the upper 2 (in the 'height' space of the 1st shelf) have regular size bowls on them from one side to the other.

I don't even remember what's on the 2nd (real) shelf. I never use it.

if I had more drawers, the bowls and mugs would be in those.

I have almost all drawers but have some shallow base cabinets opposite my range for stock pots, food processor, mixer and one shelf with dividers for small cake pans.

Cookie sheets, muffin tins and 9x13s are over the oven.

All my base cabinets are drawers and I wouldn't change a thing. I have 12" wide, 3 drawers each, base cabinets on each side of the stove. The bottom drawer of each cabinet is extra deep so I can store baking sheets and cutting boards. The other has all my oils, etc.

I have dividers above the refrigerator for additional bake ware.

I'm with the crowd in saying, "Yes, drawers! I can't wait to have drawers!" However, I won't say exclusively drawers ... the yellow below indicates the areas that'll be drawers ... they don't really fit everywhere.

    - A super susan just makes more sense in the corner. This'll be for pots-and-pans storage, and it'll not be blocked when the dishwasher's open.

    - You can put drawers under a sink, but it's an expensive /custom choice ... and I just want the typical trash can and garbage disposal (plus a little storage) under the sink.

    - The deep cabinet that'll open towards the dining area is going to be for my husband's BBQ accessories. He has a number of large items and a number of cast iron items, and drawers do have a weight limit. We've decided to go with a traditional cabinet door to hide two heavy-duty slide out shelves. Since this will be an extra-deep cabinet, we feel good about this choice.

    - I decided not to go with a pop-up cabinet for my Kitchen Aid mixer, but that would've required a cabinet door.

Good plan. Very similar to my decisions and I have an almost all drawer kitchen. I have the super Susan, two sink cabinets and a pullout for oils and vinegars.

For those of you who are using drawers for everyday dishes, bowls and glasses, are you using pegboard dividers or rubber mats to prevent them from slipping around?

I use pegboard dividers for dishes and bowls. I don't find that items on the bottom slide much as we open and close the drawer so I don't have a matt down. Instead the tower of 12 plates or 8 bowls starts to lean a little so the pegs and sides of the drawer need to be positioned to keep everything vertical. It takes a little bit of work and some flexibility to adjust where you put all the dishes so they are securely braced between the sides of the drawer and pegs (and you have to remember which stack to put dishes back into after they are washed). Overall we do like having the dishes down lower in a drawer.

I store all my plates and bowls in drawers. All I use is the plastic that comes on a roll. I got it from IKEA.

Mine never slide around. I have service for 10. They are in a 36" drawer, so I'm able to divide the stacks in half so they're not so tall.

Many here don't find they are necessary, but I have pegs for my dishes. We had them in our previous kitchen, so DH insisted. As Stan said, the stack of plates tend to lean in toward the peg, but no need for a mat. I don't store glasses in drawers. Those are located in upper cabinets. I also have my cookie sheets above my fridge. At 5'2", I can just reach to pull out what I need. Otherwise, I use a small stool or have my DH grab what I need.

All my base cabinets are drawers except for the one under the sink. I have two like the one mamagoose posted. One has my garbage/compost and the other has my mixer and blender. I think that's better than a cabinet, you open it up and they come right to you! But I have slightly more to bend down to reach than you do, LOL! I do think though, having that stuff in a pull out is easier than in a cupboard. I used Ikea, my pullouts are 18" and the blender and mixer easily fit in the same pullout.
