It is most likely a Hampton Bay (Home Depot) or Hunter. Try removing the canopy (the cover up at the ceiling) and see if there is a name inside. You should see the remote control box. You could also remove the bottom cover where a light fixture would be attached. That also may tell you the brand.

If this fails then you could buy a universal remote with either of these brands. You could get lucky and it works, or you may have to reset the DIP switches on the current receiver in the fan. If none of that works then you would have to wire in the new receiver that comes with the universal remote. The instructions tell you how to do it.

Yup slide down the canopy there is a remote receiver in there. If no brand name, get the model and look up what brand. Also see if you can find instructions how to reprogram the new remote or if that is not needed. If hard to read, get an inspection mirror so you can see it.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. It looks like the best option is to buy a new remote and install the receiver that comes with the remote. I was in Home Depot today and all the remotes they sell comes with the receiver, so might as well use the new receiver. I am also considering setting up a switch and just hardwire it so that I don't have to worry about losing the remote.
