Donna, I have two dogs (that I love) and the only solution I can think of is get rid of the dogs! Not really, but I don't have any other solution, unless you can put up a gate so they can't get in the living room.

build them a very nice dog house and put them in the yard? gate off the 'good areas' of the house? Train them not to jump on furniture (which should be done in any instance)? Get the dogs groomed often so their fur is clean and under control. I had nice furniture and had my dog inside. I got her a nice dog bed and blankets to lay on. she was not allowed on the furniture. You could also get a good vacuum and use it daily. All depends on how much you want to do to protect it.

We did put up a gate so they can't get to the rest of the house. They are not(upon pain of death) allowed upstairs ever. If we are in the room they stay off the furniture. As soon as we walk out they climb right up on the sofa. We tried buying them dog beds but they like the sofa better

Here's a possibility: Look for furniture upholstered with performance fabric. It's the same kind that are on outside awnings but it's being made and used for high-end furniture now. I go to the furniture market in High Point NC every spring and fall. The stuff I've seen is just amazing and so elegant.

they have this dog blanket that is made for sofas. it goes up the back as well. pet cover or something. you might put that on the sofa before you leave them alone? or just use any blanket or throw. kind of paint to keep taking it off and putting on, but at least it would protect it.
