Huh! I've never heard of bentgrass. Yeah, please do post pictures. I'd love to see it.

I also have some flowering plants edging the "meadow". You can see a couple in the picture up there. The main ones are salvia mellifera, salvia apiana, salvia pachyphylla, a local oenothera, and grasses like a local juncus i collected from a hike in the foothills here. Mexican feather grass seeds and shows up here and there, I've got some zauschneria also. The main "lawn" area is strictly carex though.

This one is with dog and lawn looking rather scruffy :), but the bentgrass doesn't need to be mowed regularly, and you have to accept the tuffety nature of the growth.

This week we mowed it down, and it is flanked by carex, oakleaf hydrangea, some gaura and yarrow, some fringe flowers, california fuschia and I think carpenteria. It is a very dry edge with only late afternoon sun, so everything struggles a bit.

Also Josue, for context, that scruffy dog sitting in the same pose as yours is about as big or slightly larger than a husky, so you can tell how tall the bentgrass grows!

Rain is magic!

I put in 450 carex pansa plugs in August (11 inch spacing) and they are taking their sweet time to fill in. Maybe the driest part of the summer wasn't the best time. They've definitely expanded over the past few months but my main problem now is all the weeds that have come in between the plugs (including a fair amount of grasses). I try to keep up with the weeding but it isn't really realistic.

Any suggestions on how to keep the weeds down/get rid of the grass (or will the dry summer take care of most of that for me)?

Have you tried the corn based pre-emergent weed killer? My landscaper put it down before planting my carex, and it did seem to work! If you are not committed to organic, they do have a feed and broad leaf weed killer that is meant for Carex and bentgrass lawns called Greenview Broadleaf weed control.

SF Rhino, I have spent many hours over the course of the last two years picking out weeds. I've been really meticulous about it to ensure the bed is as pure of a carex lawn as I can get it. I've had some really stubborn crabgrass that keeps coming up in a few spotsbut aside from that, summer will take care of most of them. This year, I've spread some really fine mulch in the spots that are still bare or thin, which in retrospect, I could've done from the beginning and saved myself a lot of time.

thanks for the info. i'm also regretting mulching from the start. at this point the weeds are pretty established, so maybe the dry summer will be my friend. next year i'll go mulch plus pre-emergent. the whole lawn is only about 300 square feet so i can supplement with manual weeding.
