Pressure treated wood for corbels?

We selected an antique corbel to use as a pattern, and had two matching ones made to go under a fireplace mantle. We said we were going to paint them so it didn't matter what kind of wood they used. When we picked them up they had used a pressure treated 6x6 post

nd it has splits. He assured me it would be okay if we were painting it. ??? Was he expecting me to fill the cracks? The more I think about it, it's a cheap way to go and I'm going to take them back. What wood should I request that will give a smooth paint finish?

They will split even more next to a fireplace, with growth rings like that.

2x6s, selected to have as straight a grain as possible, laminated with wood glue and pressure would be better.

PT wood is intended for exterior use. Using it for interior accent pieces is not a good use. Using poplar(glued pieces to get the dimensions) is the better wood for the corbels.

No, it will split and move forever with the center pith of the tree in the middle of the fence post leftovers. I'm with Lazy-- laminate a block of poplar (or maple/beech for a less dentable surface--avoid oak so you don't have to fill the grain when painting. ). Pine is very difficult to work with for trim in any event, likes to split, fuzz up when sanding, and reveal knots or pitch pockets at the most unfortunate times. Your parts look to involve about 2bf of lumber so you should be able to buy the stock to make them from poplar for around $5-10 ea and for maple (or similar) $6-15 ea. Doing it well will take a little more labor

A very belated thank you for confirming my decision. We had them redo the corbels, I primed and painted them, and they’re perfect. Mantle is a reclaimed beam from an old barn nearby.
