Provia, HMI, Homeguard and Albany are acknowledged as the best F/G doors. Period. Stop. Jeldwen and Pella's poor reviews are well deserved.

I bought a Glasscraft fiberglass door from Doors4home. It is absolutely beautiful and stains and looks exactly like wood. Even when you are up close, you just can't tell that it is fiberglass! We live in a zone where the summers are extraordinarily hot, and winters can be extraordinarily cold, so a solid wood door was not a good option for us, sor we were quite nervous about finding a door that looked like wood! Our Glasscraft door met all of our expectations, and we are very pleased!

Fiberglass is not effected by extreme weather. Wood contains moisture and shrinks and swells with extreme cold, heat, and humidity. Fiberglass doesn't. It is a better and lower maintenance option for those of us that live in a climate with variable weather conditions.

This is blatantly false. Fiberglass isn't affected like moisture, but it is susceptible to heat and in some cases UV exposure. You have to buy what makes sense to your area.

Further, wood isn't much affected by temperature. Moisture is the bane of wood. It will cause the wood to swell and shrink which can cause the door to fit poorly and work apart. Excessive moisture can cause rot. Wood will work just fine in wet areas as long as it is properly coated and maintained. I have a wooden boat that's 35 years old, and that's pretty young for most of its like kind.

I have wood garage and hangar doors and a wood front door (though the latter is protected by a porch). Most of my other doors are aluminum, though I have some other wood doors. If you go the wood route, I really do like the Sikkens CETOL Door and Window coatings now They hold up to the weather a lot better than most.

New England is a pretty harsh climate and wood doors seems to do fine. I just renovated a house with a fiberglass front door that was in such bad shape it had to be replaced and it was under a portico. I don't mean to start an argument, I'm just trying to better understand the reason for using these doors.

By the way, while Pella has a pretty good product, after spending a LOT of money to put real (Not replacement) Pella doors and windows in my house, I have unkind things to say about the local Pella distributor and Pella who wouldn't honor the warranty on the absolutely crappy installation job.

I know that it is not advisable, in our region, to have wood doors. And, as far as fiberglass, a lot of boats are made of fiberglass. I can't image more moisture, sun, and heat than a boat would experience. I was under the understanding that fiberglass was pretty indestructible, but I could be wrong. : )

Thank you all for your input! We're going to look at both Glasscraft fiberglass and wrought iron doors; our front door will face west in SW Texas - not a place for wood!

Oh my! We bought the eyebrow arched double door with the speakeasy! I absolutely love it!

We ordered our fiberglass door through ThermaTru. I can't speak to the quality of it yet as we have about 2 weeks to go before it arrives. I live in Texas and we've had a solid wood door for the past 11 years. It's under a covered porch and it's held up fairly well. It does swell during the summer humid months and it sticks.

We opted for a fiberglass door this time around because I wanted a painted door, not stained. I've had stained the past 11 years and wanted something different so I figured why pay an upgrade for beautiful stain grade wood if I was just going to paint it.? Hopefully we like it!

I dislike my wooden door. It definitely swells and shrinks, whereas my door in my old house never did -- I can only assume it was fiberglass.

I love my wooden door. It is covered by the front south facing porch, but still gets wet from blowing snow and rain. House was built in 1896. Door was old and run down in those 100+ years. but since it lasted that long, I figured wood was fine :) Had a new door constructed by a local door builder and they salvaged the glass from it and made the trim to match. It is beautiful. I expect it will outlast me! :)

@chellefnp - how is your door holding up? We are considering a very similar door from Glasscraft. In your photo, the faux wood treatment looks good, but curious if it looks plastic-y at all when you're right up close.

I still love it. its held up well so far, and I still get lots of compliments on it. No regrets at all.

@chellefnp What color is the finish? Looking at Glasscraft doors. I ordered samples and the samples they sent with the exact same names and detail came looking like two completely different colors so I am a bit afraid to place an order. I like the color of your door in the photo.
