I like the dark blue (last photo) but with the purple door in the photo above it.

Second photo, first blue and white but I would do a simple white door. It is a classic home and a white door would be great. I would change up the pots and flowers and put my reds there. Perhaps some additional red leafed shrubs to repeat the deep red.

I do like the suggestion of orange; green also looks great with dark blue.

CLC, I agree! I was playing with a bunch of greens for that last one, but they all washed out over the existing dark blue. There were some really nice greens in the historic colours.

@Flo Mangan, here's the corner of our lower deck. You can see that I do like that bright red! Good idea to put more of it in the garden.

Lordy, who cares what the house looks like! What a view! Anything will look good on your house. I know you will pick something perfect for you! Lots of great choices. I love red too!

I think a soft medium gray would be pretty. I know gray is overused but honestly in this case with a black roof it would be pretty and not so jarring. Then go for a screaming vibrant door. Good luck :) Beautiful view.

I like Flo's suggestion of blue and white with some red in the landscaping. I also like the lighter green in the 4th pic...with all white trim and colorful plantings. The lighter color brings the house more to life for me.

Hey, chloebud, nice to see you here! :) I think my dark gray roof colours are all showing up black or off-black and you and I talked about why a gray roof is a good idea for a couple of reasons. This is a house that is just full of windows, which makes a lot of sense, as it has ocean views on three sides. BUT...with all those windows, I am wondering if a dark house would pull in heat the way a dark roof does. The house has a walk-out basement, so there's a lot of the siding that gets full sun all afternoon and evening and it can get warm in here (well, by Nova Scotia standards!).

p.s. This is a morning pic. I don't seem to have any of the back of the house taken in the afternoon.

Hey Sharon! :) I like the way the roof color looks in the photo with the lighter green I mentioned. This is truly a lovely home and setting!

I came back to Houzz to comment on your question from yesterday (regarding a blue grey). We are about to reclad our house in Cape Cod wood siding in BM's Flint (AF-560). There is a house a few blocks away from us in that colour and we love it. It will be paired with white trim to match our new aluminum clad windows (Loewen's arctic white). The colour chip looks like charcoal grey, but in the sunlight it looks blue. On an overcast day it looks more grey.

Beautiful home! Fabulous setting, too! OK, full disclosure, I'm not a blue house fan. Look at your Oceanside view photo...any blue would compete with that gorgeous azure sky. My favorite would either be a crisp medium gray with bright white trim and a door the same color as your favorite red flowers that you might have been planted around the porch. OR, since you are considering a darker color, I really like a rich olive green with a maroon door. Whatever you finally choose, you can't go wrong with such a lovely home. Good luck!

As I expected, we didn't reach a consensus, but you gave me some good things to consider, including the benefits of a lighter roof, not fighting with the beautiful blues surrounding our property, planting more red flowers and reconsidering gray (though it would have to have a dash of blue in it for me). Speaking of red, I couldn't resist posting this, Benjamin Moore's Cottage Red...thanks again, it's been helpful and fun!

Hopingtogetfit, I have looked at Amherst Gray a couple of times, and it's a very nice gray. I'd like to go with something that has a shot of blue or green. Love your gray with the yellow door!

Red door absolutely! By George i think we've got it! Do some large sample boards to check in your light at different times of day. What i like about that color is it will stand up to the size and location of your amazing home. You will probably also have to re-stain your wood decks to a deeper brown/red look. But it is a great combo.

A darker gray roof might be better. It would keep things grounded. You are replacing the brown roof right?

Love the dark blue with the yellow door!! Assuming the roof will be black or dark charcoal.

Have you looked at sherwin Williams Homburg gray? It is one of my favorite exterior blue grays......it looks gray/slate to various shades of blue, depending on the light/time of day. It looks better in person to me than the photos I am finding online.

@CLC, I'll take a look at that, thanks. I think one of the reasons I like colours that meet at the intersection of two colours is the point you mentioned about looking different in different lights...I always enjoy that, indoors or out.

Our front door (on the Amherst Gray house) was orginally red, and it looked great. I just changed it to yellow to be different! Several neighbors have red doors.

Photo shop in BM Madrid Gras as the door to last picture. Let's see what that looks like. It is such a fun color.

@hopingtogetfit, I like both your old red and new yellow doors. I do like a door to say, "WELCOME!" When we put a red door on our last house, years ago, everyone in the neighbourhood had beige or white or camel doors, so we could tell people ours was the house with the red door...and then lots of houses suddenly had red doors, so I get where you're coming from!

@bunnyllg, this door surely says WELCOME! And I was playing with the "goes with" feature and stumbled across Ashland Slate, which is a gray with a hint of purple...maybe that's what I need for all the green space we have, and it won't fight with the ocean, with all its shades from blue to gray to greenish. @Alterior Motives Design, I love those door colours! In fact, the darker blue is very similar to the shade we have on our blah light-tan house. When we bought the house, the door was black (odd, we thought, with no black anywhere else), so we painted it BM Admiral Blue to at least put something we liked on the exterior. The turquoise door is really fun...do you know the colour?

@mousemudgett, it's pretty amazing and elegant, but I didn't like the phrase "needs more upkeep than a lighter color" when I looked at a site with black houses. The darker blue, much as I (and many people who commented here) like it, is probably going to be nixed for the same reason...that and the heat-trapping. Great for another house and place, though.

I like the last one, but not with that door. So jealous that you live on the ocean!!!

@northpoint2, I'm liking the last one, too, as well as the one Flo found. As tempting as it is to climb out of the neutrals box, I know I am happiest, indoors and out, with a neutral backdrop in nature colours with hits of bolder colour that I can change seasonally or when I fall in love with a new one. The one Flo found echoes the colour of the rocks on our shoreline, which also appeals to me. So....what door colour would you choose?

It took me 55 years to get to the ocean, and I don't take a minute of it for granted!

RE: the door color, I'm a bit out of my depth (check out my ideabooks, I'm a neutral girl unless we're talking BLUE!) ;) Maybe a deep red, or something to blend in with the exterior. You could do so much with planters, etc. to give you lovely pops of color!

Rocky Coast is so right and with red door, awesome. Don't fall back on basically beige! Please! Almost as bad as gray everywhere inside! This color has strength, and this home has strength against the elements and time! Cloak it in strength. But, hey, you have to come home to it and look at it every day, so you have to decide.

Flo, I solemnly swear I won't beige out on this! When I said neutral, I meant that I probably wouldn't be happy with an actual blue or green or purple or yellow house. Honestly, I think Rocky Coast is going to be the winner, and with a rich red door, because I won't be able to resist that. :) I agree with everything you said: it's a real Atlantic Coast colour, with that strong gray and just the hint of blue we see our on shoreline rocks. My husband and I waited a lifetime to be here, and we always want to honour the house and its setting.
