You should be fine if you can get them seeded ASAP. I like to transplant at about 8-9 weeks. I plant leeks for both a summer and fall harvest. I sowed my summer leeks (Bandit and King Richard) in mid January and planted them out on March 22. I will start my fall leeks next weekend but I will grow mostly King Richard in the fall since it is an early 75 DTM variety.

You can harvest leeks well into winter as long as the ground isn't frozen. The key is getting them to size up before the days start to get short. If the ground is going to freeze up you can either mulch them heavily or harvest them all and either freeze or dehydrate them. Feed them lots of nitrogen for fast growth!!

This is a picture of some I started for my brother in Minnesota...I think they are about 6 weeks old in the picture. Starting at about 5 weeks you will need to give them weekly haircuts to keep them in the 4-5" range.

Couldn't they be direct sown now?

Yes I imagine they could but I wouldn't want to have to thin them and keep the area weeded while they are tiny. I just started my fall leeks last weekend and will plant them out in late June after I harvest the broccoli that is currently residing in that bed.
