Definitely not PI. Looks like Duchesnea indica, also known as mock strawberry (but the fruits have no flavor). It's a pesky weed around here.

Not beneficial, but a troublesome weed that gets around quickly. It's back to being Potentilla again.

Jay, it's gotten to the point that I don't even try to keep up with the splitter vs clumper teams, lol. You'd think in this day of DNA sequencing they could make up their minds (although in this case, it seems they actually are basing the change on DNA evidence).

I love all the taxonomic changes, even though I always have to be on my toes as far as remembering them. All the new names are the result of DNA testing. Noone changes a name unless there's a good reason to. There's a push to make a lot of varieties species, to give them more protection. DNA testing is the reason why so many changes are happening, but the results of using it will make most new names stable permanently. I don't see much splitting where 1 species is split into 2 or more species. I mostly see varieties being elevated to species, and there are many unnamed entities that don't match any other species, and those plants need further study before they can be named new species. Lumping is something that Ive never seen done, but there are many treatments by botanists in the past, that lumped species together, and after reexamining them they are proven to be worthy of species rank and thus split.

While we're on the subject I just want to mention that all Andropogon species, except A. gerardii, Big Bluestem and one other have been moved into a new genus Anatherum.

It should be understood that a key to identifying poison ivy and poison oak is the following. Of the three leaves in the cluster, the two side leaves have very short stems (petioles). The center leaf has a long stem. That's NOT what I see in the pictures. Of course, poison ivy and poison oak leaves aren't serrated either. This “leaves of three, let them be" business is pretty much nonsense, as LOADS of plants have clusters of three leaves.

And, of course, more obvious still, neither poison ivy nor strawberries have jolly yellow flowers!

There are 5 varieties of Toxicodendron radicans, and at least 1 of them has serrated leaflets.

In my neck of the neighborhood, I've never seen serrated leaves on poison ivy. Most of the leaves in that picture are not serrated.

The key says coarsely toothed signifying serration, but most of the Poison Ivy varietiess have lobed leaflets rather than serrated. The type species Toxicodendron radicans var radicans has leaflets without serration, and it's the most common variety in Texas. In Illinois T. radicans var radicans and T. radicans var negundo are the most common. Variety negundo get's it's name because it resembles Box Elder.
