When to move California Lilac (Ceanothus)?

I bought two of these (ceanothus) three years ago--I planted one of them in huge planter and has been doing extremely well compared to this one I planted in the ground. I plan of digging it up and planting it just like the other one--plant it in a huge planter. When is the best time to do this?

Ceanothus do not like to be moved,as far as I know. I think they have very wide-spreading roots, so it's almost impossible to dig them up with a root ball of any kind. My advice would be just leave it in the ground (it may well "pick up"; you don't say how long it's been there) and buy a new one for the planter. Actually I'm kind of surprised to hear that the one in the planter is doing so well!
