Accessorizing mantel of large stone fireplace in log home

We have a log home with a very large stone fireplace. We have rustic decor with animal heads (my husband is a hunter). I am not sure what to do with the mantel. Large candles perhaps or pictures? The mantel is only 9" deep and about 96" across the whole top. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
