I can't comment on the Smart Pots, unfortunately, but Earthboxes are amazing. They do require an up-front investment that can be steep if you get all the bells and whistles (staking kit with castors, automatic watering system, etc. - both of which I very highly recommend), but if you set them up right, they are fantastic. You would not regret the purchase and you will have them for many, many years. I have coworkers who've had them for 10 years - I've had mine for 4.

Thank You. I'm on a 2nd floor and would probably have to use a watering can. The Earthboxes don't seem to need compost. And I like the idea that if I forget to water, at least there is a supply on hand.

Just a nice potting mix is all you need. Compost might actually hamper the EB because it is denser than potting mix and would likely retain too much water. I think there's some more discussion about that on other forums, but I just stick with potting mix. EB claims you can reuse the same mix for up to 8 seasons. I just remove a few inches of potting mix each season, then add the same amount of new mix, combine well and done. I should never theoretically need to empty my EBs completely if I keep replenishing some each season. Each season seems to get better and better and that's what I've heard from others.. :)

You are right, thank you. EB say not to use compost which is one of the pluses in my making a decision. Smart pot needs it. I'd rather spend extra money for ease since I'm not too sure if my thumb is green or rust. :)
