Kungsback black Ikea kitchen cabinets

We are in the process on deciding on the kitchen cabinets for our kitchen remodeling. Initially we wanted to go with Ikea's Tingsryd cabinet. Two weeks ago we visited IKEA and saw their new cabinet style/type called Kungsbacka. It is coated with "foil" (this might not be the correct term) made of recycled plastic. We fell in low with the look and feel to it.

I know it it pretty new cabinet style but wanted to check if anybody here has experience with Kungsbacka quality and if anybody has used it in their homes. Would love to see pictures and hear others experience and opinion regarding this cabinet front style.

See the picture below of the kitchen with Kungsbacka.

Thank you.

Hi Everyone, I am here for the same reason. Husband and I fell in love with Kungsbacka kitchen and thought it would really look good with the kind of look we are trying to achieve for our small home. So far I have seen some good advise on maintaining the door fronts (which was one of the drawbacks for us because we did not want to regret buying matte black later on). Would you guys say that the Kungsbacka doors are going to hold up for good 5 years? (I am someone who likes to maintain and keep things clean but just curious). If anyone did end up with scratches, how did you fix it?

Sorry to hijack the thead, #redavis76 I love your kitchen, particularly the backsplash tile where it is from?

Backsplash is a hybrid of honed marble and retro tiles from Floor and Decor. Thanks!

The doors are holding up fine so far for us and we have a crazy house with kids and pets. Take care when wiping so you don't get the streaks by using a damp microfiber. I love the matte - of the Kungsbacka understated and clean lines and they are made from recycled products!

Has anyone found a paint that color matches these cabinet doors? I have an adjacent outcropping that I would like to blend in.

We installed the Tingsryd for our island with a split design of Ringhult uppers and lowers. I really wish we had went with the Kungsbacka as the Tingsryd in our Florida lighting doesn’t look black but more of an outdated espresso dark brown. In daylight hours the island looks like it belongs in a Hampton Inn breakfast area. I will definitely order a sample next time for lighting comparison. The fingerprinting is horrible but honestly I can deal with that. On the plus side, my Ringhult cabinets are beautiful!

Ok. It’s been a month and I officially hate the finish on these cabinets. I can’t remove one fingerprint. May just buy new doors.

@Trish did you buy the Kungbacka? Can you share pictures of the troublesome area

Yes I did. I put it in a rental so I cannot easily go back and take pictures.

I do have to go and take it out before the end of the year so I’ll get some pictures then .

@Trish maybe the renters arent doing a good job taking care of it?

    They haven’t moved in yet.

Hey Trish, I was at Ikea the other day and I was wearing a sweater (it was either polyester or acrylic sweater) and I just wiped one of the kungsbacka door down... and it worked. I literally experimented in Ikea. I tried paper towel with some water..didn't work..but the sweater cleaned it up. I also work for a kitchen company so one of my clients requests a matte black laminate. When I recieved the laminate it was dirty with finger marks. I used the sleeve of my sweater to clean it and it worked.

I hope this suggestion works because Ikea prices for cabinets really is exceptional

The best matte black you can get is the Fenix material. Anti fingerprint and very scratch resistant. All high-end European kitchens use this material. We make doors for Ikea kitchens out of this material all the time. Many colors available. Here’s a photo of the black (taken before the counter top was in).

@jdesign_gw do you have a website? I'm looking for Fenix material doors as well. Would love to see some of your projects

Houzz wants you to make contact using the email in peoples profile. They don’t like for people to give out their own information although it’s fine if its done by someone other than yourself. Try that first please. If there’s any problem let me know.

@redavis76 did you add end panels to either side of the cabinets next to your range?

We have had Kungsbacka cabinets for approximately 8 months in a highly used kitchen (I cook and bake constantly). While you can see finger prints on them (kids not using handles, greasy baking fingers, etc); I have found them easy to remove. I have had luck by just wiping them often, and also by vinegar. I probably wipe them down more than my last natural wood ones, however, it keeps them sharp and clean and I love that.

Also, I would 100% buy them again. And love the rich matte, clean lines finish. We also put them in our master bath. And still need to install our toe kicks.....

We also recently got a kungsbacka kitchen installed and absolutely love it. yes some smudges do show but nothing that a straight forward wipe with a soapy cloth doesn't fix.

mrmeherali I loved the colour of your kitchen so much that we decided to steal your inspiration! how is the modern emulsion fairing after a year or two? I think we'll probably get tiles for the practicality (behind the cooker) but I'd love to just keep the wall as it is...

    guys love the pictures.

If any one here is in Canada ontario - there are some options where companies retro fit doors into ikea cabinets. I found one close to me with a matte black that is anti scratch and finger print resistant. I might just save up money to make it less of a chore to keep things clean!

Hey Guys quick question. Anyone install the Kungsbacka kitchen with an oven range rather then a cook top? We have a range and I am trying to see if its necessary for me to have an end panel on either side of the range?

We installed with a slide in induction range. Just make sure you get your measurements correct. We should have given ourselves another 1/4-1/2" , it was a tight fit but worked. I would suggest using end panels on both sides on the opening as well as the doors and drawers align precisely with the boxes/ frames. You'll want the clearance.

for those who installed kungsbacka; did you order the white cabinets or black brown? I'm trying to figure out how the tops of the white cabinets aren't visible from the front? Thanks!

White and they only peek through on the section with drawers. But you have to be seated in front of them. Which unfortunately I am when I’m at the kitchen table

I installed the Kungsbacka kitchen almost one year ago and I am sick of constantly cleaning the doors. Every fingerprint shows up and requires a lot of elbow grease to clean and who has the time for all that cleaning?! I've complained to IKEA and they've agreed to replace the doors with a different cabinet type. A pity as I loved the matte finish but it's just not worth it. Poor product.

they do mark really easily but I've found this pretty effective - wipe with kitchen sponge and dry with tea towel works well. I love our kitchen so much I think I'm prepared to suffer the dreaded smudge marks. the reviews for this kitchen on Ikea's website are pretty shocking. this is clearly a common problem people are having!

We put them in a condo flip we did and I’m in love with them! We’re thinking of using them in our kitchen at home now.

Hello, we also remodeled our kitchen using IKEA products, namely Kunsbacka. The countertop has stained and I cannot find a product to help me remove. If anyone has recently

come up with a great cleaning product to help me sleep at night, please share!

We went with kungsbacka lowers and the ekestard uppers. I built a solid base/kick panel to raise the bench a bit higher than standard. I like the cabinets/draws from IKEA, but we went with handles, bench etc from elsewhere. I do find cleaning the black fronts annoying but fortunately it doesn't get direct sunlight so it's not as noticeable until you get up real close. I have found just warm soapy water and a microfiber cloth to wipe off. Reading some of the comments here I'll definitely give the other suggestions a go.

@amolsen1 What did you use as your backsplash behind oven/range? Looks so clean

I have had these for 2 years and I have a bright kitchen. I can definitely say that no soap or soap detergent vinegar combo will remove the smudges. It turns fingerprints into smudge area and will not come off no matter how you try. I had an enjo rep here today to try and she was surprised that she couldn't remove either. The look is beautiful but forever annoyance I would rethink if I had to do it again.

@k_mehria. I haven’t chosen a backsplash yet! It’s just our putty colored Alaskan Skies Benj Moore paint. :)

@Chester Pegg We tested (and rejected) the Axstad Matte Blue. Dish soap (like drizzled on, not a soapy cloth), a layer of Pledge Extra Moisturizing, another dish soap wash, then 2 coats of Turtle Wax evened our door out, then a detailer spray worked pretty well for removing subsequent smudges (I was hoping the wax would leave it shiny, but no luck). It was way too much work for us, since we have no idea how long the Turtle Wax coating will last, but since you're living with them already, it might be worth it for you.

Anyone have experience with the Bodarp doors? they are the same matte recycled material but in a gray green color. I am trying to figure out if the problem is the black color or the recycled mate material.

No direct experience with Bodorp. I’d strongly suggest biting the bullet and buying a drawer or door for your own testing in your own lighting.

While several people have mentioned they can’t handle the smudges and fingerprints on Axstad blue, my partner and I are fine with how they look dirty and our ability to clean them. I suspect a lot of it has to do with where light is entering the kitchen (because it is the glare off the oil that matters most), sight lines, and how “perfect” of a house you keep. I went into the testing very suspect that the cabinets would work for us, but there we are.

We have the black Kungsback cabinets as well and to clean them I now use Krud Kutter and it works really, really well. I was super depressed when we first got them and I couldn't get the fingerprints and drips off. This saved our kitchen!!! Next up is the laundry room!

Found the answer to cleaning Kungsbacka Black doors... Simple Green... Lots of paper towels. Wipe dry, repeat if needed. Seems to have enough "oil" to cover the spotting and is great to remove grime.

    Krud cuter isn’t too harsh?

    Thanks for sharing your experience

You'd think it would be!! But no, I'm still using it and it continues to work great. No discoloration, just takes away the greasy spots and leaves it looking matte. I agree it is surprising.

I saw a YouTube and they used pledge to clean them-I am considering them and appreciate this thread

@Meghan Mengel- I tried it with my Axstad test door, it didn't work.

yeah I love these cabinets but I am scared to death of them looking dirty all the time:( I appreciate your "port of indecision" thats how I feel right now!

Mrs Meyer’s baking soda cream cleanser will clean it right up.
