Don't you have to remove ranunculus bulbs before winter in Ontario? Never grew them, just my observation on growing tips. I planted tulips together with peonies and will probably regret it in a few years time once the root system of peonies develops. I suggest not to plant anything too close to peony roots - the best live mulch so far for me was some kind of tiny and not too offensive sedum, I am starting to fight woodruff and planting catmint Walker's Low instead as it does not spread.

Yes I believe I've read that ranunculus bulbs do need to be dug out in winter. I'll have to check. Would that disturb the peonies? i know peonies need plenty of room to grow over the years. Either I'll space it out more or maybe I'll just plant the ranunculus in a different area.

Just thinking I wouldn't want them being cluttered either.
