I live in central New York on a 6 acre piece of land that was once part of a farm, there is still a lot of open area around us. We built a ranch style house 3 years ago with a gable roof (I think 5/12 pitch). We chose a higher grade shingle that was supposed to withstand winds up to 120 mph. It was put on in July so the warm temperatures should have allowed it to seal. There have been at least 6 times in the last 3 years that we have lost shingles in storms. Our builder has been great and so has the roofing company (so far) but before I take them up on their offer to replace the roof with the same shingle I am wondering if a metal roof would hold up better. I looked on-line and thought standing seam metal was supposed to be good but I fear that I could loose a whole roof instead of a few shingles if the wind is strong enough! Would metal roof tiles be better? And how about the sound? Is it true that a metal roof is noisy or would that be mitigated since this is a well insulated home instead of a pole barn? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you-
