Since there was no grass growing at the time, the fertilizer just fertilized the weedy patches. Next year wait until late May to fertilize so the grass is all the way through the spring green up and flush of fast growth. Can you back away from the patch so we can see what the patch looks like? Take a few steps back and take the picture again. The best garden/lawn pictures are taken on a cloudy or hazy day if you can do that.

The best time of year to reseed is in the fall. If you seed in the spring, then you have to water it daily to sprout the grass seed. Unfortunately there is crabgrass seed lying their waiting for daily watering to sprout, too. The first grass you see coming up would be crabgrass. And topsoil is not needed for new seed. I'm not sure where that long-held believe came from, but grass sprouts on top of the soil.

Hi. Thank you for your response. I used Jonathan Greene crab grass preventer plus new seed fertilizer. Not sure if that makes a difference with the crab grass. I hope these pictures are better.
